Engine Tremors

If I don't drive my car for a couple of days, my car will shake at idle speed for about a mintue or so. It's enough to make me nervous. It's been doing this for about a year now, but only when I don't drive it for at least 2 days. After it "warms up", it's fine.

Any thoughts?

No idea, but mine does the same thing. It's especially bad if I turn the A/C on since the engine is working harder. I haven't worried about it though. While it shakes, it doesn't stall, and the RPMs stay steady.

Same with mine, but I'm not too worried though. It does this more often in winter when it's cold, but in summer OK.

Shaking usually means a miss. You can confirm by listening to the exhaust, where if it's a miss you'll hear a putt-putt-putt,,, as the missing cylinder opens to the exhaust w/ no-fire. This would primarily be caused by poor spark plugs on V6 w/ Coil-over-Plug ignition.

Problem could also be a dirty throttle body starving engine for air (very low idle speed) during cold starts w/ possible idle air control valve sticking closed also. Cleaning idle air control valve, throttle plate (both sides, and throttle body bore may may a huge difference.

good luck

If you idle is low then all you will have to do is clean the throttle plates and bore and the idle will go back up.

Thanks for the advice. I was reading earlier about cleaning the throttle body, and was planning on doing that today, as I've already removed my intake box. One question: I need to take off the hose that connects to the intake, and clean all around that, correct?

I'll have to listen for the exhaust sounds next I start it up. I changed my spark plugs about 1 year ago and have only put about 6,000 miles on since, so I'm not sure if that's the cause on my car. I'll clean the intake manifold and see if that works.

Thanks again!

Yes you have to remove the tube to clean the throttle plate and bore. It is very simple and doesn't cost more than $5.

i beleive the 3.2's might mis on purpose to heat up the cat faster to be more fuel efficient. if the 2.5 idles like that look for white smoke it could be your head thats what mine did before it went.

I took the whole intake apart last night and cleaned everything. I disconnected all the hoses and cleaned everything with carb cleaner. It was a little difficult starting the motor after that and it idled really crazy for about 15 miles. After that, it was back to normal...probably burning up all that lose dirt and excess carb cleaner. I want to see if that stops the shaking.

^ after you do the seafoam and start it up you are supossed to run the engine until it's clear of smoke. if you are still getting smoke even now then you are burning something. seafoam will not just linger around for a while. if its white smoke your burning coolant, blue smoke and its oil. most likely since your confusing the smoke with seafoam its burning coolant, does the car smell kind of sweet? fixing this problem involves replacing the head gasket. i would do it yourself to be honest. i replaced my engine instead but i should of just build it up. oh well either way it needs to be fixed, and dont let the engine heat up to hot or you wont have another option besides new engine.

o yeah i know what your saying. i havent put coolent in my car in a very long time but i always check my oil and coolent. if it was burning coolent wouldnt it be getting low cuz my coolent aint low at all and my car doesnt not over heat.
