charging problem

i am having a charging issue. seem like the alternator is not charging the battery. full load of battery( turn on headlight, stereo, lights in car), the voltage is close to 12.8 volts. took battery and alternator to check if its okay, they both seem fine. i have a 2.5 tl by the way. any ideas and help is appreciated..

Any other symptoms?
12.8 with all those loads probably means it's charging fine.

Agree w/ Mike. A voltage of 12.8 w/ big load is good. More symptoms. Any work done on car recently?

Check my posts string for a related problem and see what can be caused by a worn out (slipping rubber section) harmonic balancer. This problem causes some strange symptoms; no battery light and battery runs down till engine will stop.

Walmart has a battery analyzer for about $15 that plugs into the cigarette lighter and allows battery voltage to be monitored full time. This will tell when battery is discharging; voltage < ~12v.

good luck

Check the output cable on the alternator. My terminal was snapped in half. A quick crimp of a new connector and all the problems went away.

~Cheers~

i had a timing belt change a couple of months back. when i took the alternator off, the thing that seem odd was the ring that hold the belt that connect to the alternator from the harmonic balancer is loose. i mean you can wiggle it. im not sure if thats suppose to be. could there be a short somewhere?

You may have lost the small clip that holds the adjusting bolt in place against the upper adjustment bracket. This will allow the threaded adjusting rod to gradually vibrate down through the threaded idler until it contacts the anti-sway bar. If the lock nut on the idler is not tightened, the belt will be completely loose. The clip is essential. It's only a few bucks from Acura. See following link, part 23.

I recently had this problem w/ my 2.5TL due to lazy mechanics not replacing or saving the part.

Acura 2.5 TL AC Compressor Assy

good luck

Sorry, wrong belt. The alternator belt is tighted w/ a separate but similar adjustment mechanism. See following link.

Alternator Brackets

texashonda, it was the harmonic balancer like you said. i measured the voltage when the car was idle. it came out to be close to 12.4. i then rev up the motor to like 3500 rpm and the voltage jumped to 13.5. so i think the belt is slipping off from the harmonic balancer at low rpm and at higher rpm it somehow "gripped" the rubber piece underneath the metal ring that hold the belt.

now blower motor is shot..just right on time for summer..sucks...

You need to run down my posts on the subject of harmonic balancer replacement and be very careful when reinstalling.

Blower motor on 2.5TL is a real PIA to replace. Do you plan to DIY or pay someone. AC must be discharged and lots of parts to remove. Looks like a couple of day job perhaps for DIY. My sympathy.

good luck
