My car is dead. It won’t start. Well, it started on its own (no key in ignition) and I couldn’t find a way to shut it off. Then it popped, smoked, sizzled, and died. All I get is a check engine light. No power to the motor what so ever.

Last night it was acting like I left the lights on and the battery was dead. But I didn’t and I knew that it was acting like the battery terminals were oxidized (it did this before a long time ago). So I pulled off the cable from the battery and cleaned everything. Put it back together and it started up no problem.

This morning I left the house with the intentions of going to class. Put the key in the ignition, turn to start, nothing. In fact, it acted exactly like it did last night. So I opened the hood, pulled off the battery cable again, cleaned everything, put the cable back on and the motor started by itself. No key in the ignition, didn’t press anything on the remote (actually the key was sitting on the driver’s seat). I thought it was weird that the car started itself, sat back in the car, put the key in and to on and nothing worked. It was like the key wasn’t even in the ignition, but the motor was still on. Turn the car off, motor was still running.

Nothing I could do would turn the motor off. I pulled the battery cable off again, pulled the fuse to the battery, etc. would turn the motor off. It continued to run, then it made a pop. Started to smoke and make a sizzling sound, then made a horrible noise and died.

All power returned to the car when I got back in and put the key in the ignition and turned it to ON. Turn to start and the motor does nothing. Absolutely nothing. No clicking noise from the starter, nothing. I don’t know what happened.

It smells like burnt oil and plastic inside and outside my car now.

 

Sounds possessed.

Maybe the starter solenoid is shorted somehow...? Weird how it was able to start without your key in the on position to have the fuel pump running...

mine did the same its got to do with the ignition modual or something like that is like 75$

If the popping and smoking came from steering column area, I suspect your ignition switch (not the same as the key assembly) is the culprit. It's about a $60-70 part from the dealer that's not too hard to replace.
