Question 3-4 gear shifting problem

Hello All,

I have a 97 2.5 TL with about 110k miles on it. Last night I noticed that transmission would not shift from the 3rd to the 4th gear . Sometimes it would happen to me when I first started driving in cold weather but this time the car was at normal operating temperature.

Now going at 60mph the RPM reads 3K while usually I would be going about 70 mph. Rest of the gears are shifting really smooth without any slippage.

Has anyone ever encountered such an issue? The transmission fluid level is normal. I am suspecting the solenoid - any thoughts?

Thank you for reading this message.

is it possible that you put it in d3 instead of d4 last night?

No it was(is) in D4. Actually I dropped it in D4 through 2 & 1 to see if the shifting changed. Infact, I am still having that problem this morning... man I hope I dont have to get a reman transmission.

make sure you have enough transmission fluid. your tranny will slip and not work right if there isn't enough fluid in there. when was the last time you had a tranny flush? just things to think about. i think you can get one done from the dealer for $150'ish, so you hsould be able to get it done cheaper anywhere else. keep us up to date.

Thanks for the responses.

Today I had the dealership flush the transmission (cost $80 + tax). The ride feels smooth but for the first couple of mile on the freeway it still would not shift into 4th but then it did and since then it had been alright. Hopefully it stays like that.

On the flip side though: the mechanic forgot to put the dipstip for transmission fluid back on and infact left it sitting on the motor. Fortunately when I got home I decided to look under the hood to check the fluid level. I did not see any fluid splashed anywhere. Does anyone know if the fluid is under pressure near the dipstick that it may have gushed out ? Although I did not see any tell-tale signs.

i'm not sure if it's under pressure....but if you didn't see any, or smell any, then i'm sure you're fine. it has to travel a bit farther than the motor oil (if you were to leave that one off.....and i've heard about that happenin....oil goes everywhere) and it's not as much under pressure as that i'm thinkin. i think you'll be okay, BUT i would call the dealership and tell them about it. you will probably get something free out of the deal. and if you wanna be snooty, which i would to the dealer, then embelish a little bit and bitch and moan. then you might get something very free.

and it sounds like your tranny is back on track......that's a very good thing.
