Remote volume control is dead

Well, apparently the steering-wheel mounted volume control decided it was going to stop working today. The car is a 2000 RL Navi and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this. It will be going into the dealer for an oil change here soon, and will get it fixed for sure, just am curious right now what could be the cause.

I know that this remote volume setup is controlled by a tiny motor that turns the volume knob up or down, so I'm thinking this motor just decided to die. Does that mean a new head unit will have to be installed, or can they simply fix the volume knob motor? Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Not sure.. but I'd imagine it would be easy to fix if you can open the headunit. If not, a replacement could be found for a hundred or two.

Turns out the motor to the volume knob died. That means a whole new headunit. So, $1200+ later, the remote volume control will work Ordered a new headunit from Delray Acura (offered best price I could find for a new headunit...roughly $1200 shipped) and will have it installed as soon as it arrives.

As a side note, they provided an RL loaner while getting the oil changed and the volume knob problem checked out.

Volume control on steering wheel

I had the same problem on my 2002 RL. I had the warranty and they fixed it. I think they had to replace the motor.

Thanks

Paul

I think total for everything will be about 1700, including the price of the new headunit, timing belt, and labor. Acura of Portland treats us really well.
