Programming Remote 1998 RL

Hi All!

I have been watching and reading this post and finally registered. Great Info here!!!

I bought a keyfob from keylessride.com but cannot get my car to enter the programming mode. I tried for hours --insert key, turn to on, press unlock, turn key back to off, (did this three times), then back to on pressed unlock on the remote.

It came with instructions which seem to be correct (they match the forum ones) but is there a way to tell which remote I should have --a number or anything--that will work on this model?

Thanks for any help!

The remote is different from 98-98 RL to 99-04 RL if I'm correct. For the programming, you must pay attention on every single word on each step in the following.

Notes: 1) Entering the programming mode cancels all learned transmitter codes, so none of the previously programmed transmitters will work. You must reprogram all the transmitters once you’re in programming mode. The system accepts up to three transmitters.
2) To keep the system from exiting the programming mode, complete each step within 5 seconds of the previous step, and program the transmitters within 10 seconds of each other.

Steps:
1) Turn the ignition switch ON (ll)
2) Press the “LOCK” or “UNLOCK” button on one of the transmitters. (A non-programmed transmitter can be used for this step.)
3) Turn the ignition switch OFF (0).
4) Repeat steps 1, 2 and 3 two more times with the transmitter used in step 2.
5) Turn the ignition switch ON (ll).
6) Press the “LOCK” or “UNLOCK” button on the same transmitter. Check that the power door locks cycle to confirm that you are in the programming mode.
7) Press the “LOCK” or “UNLOCK” button on each transmitter. (You can program up to four transmitter per vehicle.) Check that the power door locks cycle after you push each transmitter button, confirming that the system has accepted the transmitter’s code.

Programming remote

Thanks 97_RLer.

These are the directions I received from keylessride.com. I did it exactly as stated (within the time frame, etc). The power locks work but could it be the remotes I have are not the right ones?

I did not receive the original ones when I bought the car.
The remotes I have are labeled as:
FCC ID: CWT72147KA if that helps, I don't know how to check it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. This forum has already been tremendously helpful to me and saved me some $$$$.

Thanks guys!

After you do the directions, you should hear the locks cycle. Did you hear that?

If you do, then push the lock button on each remote you have one at a time. If they all don't work, then there is probably something wrong in the car. If only 1 doesn't work, it's likely the remote. The FCC ID number you listed is the right one for your RL.

No cycling

I am definitely doing it exactly as posted. I just cannot get the car to cycle the locks. That is what made me think it might be the remote, but don't really know.

Ooops, just re-read your response Megatron and it seems that it must be something in the car. Is there anyway to tell if it is the driver side receiver unit (or whatever it is called) since the power locks work in the car with the switch?

Thanks again!

The FCC ID number is for 96-98+ RL. What year of RL do you have? Have you check the battery on the remote? The battery voltage must be somewhat higher than 3V.

It is a 1998 RL. I will try replacing the batteries and see if that helps! Thanks again.

What part would I need for the driver door since the battery does check out? Thanks!
