Engine Wash

My 2002 RL has started to have funny smells coming from the engine compartment. After removing the engine cover I find that after 20 years on the road it's a bit dirty. No obvious leaks, just general oil and dirt build up over time, so I want to give it a bath. I'm thinking a couple of cans of foaming engine brite and some light pressure. Anyone have any tips on how I should go about this so I don't cause myself trouble?
