EGR valve

I have a check engine light and intermittent TCS light being triggered by a clogged/faulty EGR valve.

Would anyone that has been through this before offer advice?

Is there a simple cleaning process or does the valve have to be replaced?

Is there an inexpensive option?

Not sure if this is easy to clean or not. I used to clean the PCV valve on other cars, but the RL is much more complex. I have a tech manual with a diagram if you'd like it. Send me an email at seamusNH@gmail.com and I'll send the pdf. It is probably worth a try...

I believe that your car is under an extended emissions warranty. It would be covered 14 years or 150,000 miles. PM me and i can send you a link to the TSB. Im not 100% sure if this would help you but it might

What code are you getting??

If you are getting the one for Insufficient Flow, then the intake manifold has to be removed in order to clean the EGR port on the intake side. It cost me about $300 to have the dealer do it.

If it's really just the EGR, you can remove that yourself. It's easy. But 99% of the time, it's the intake manifold side.

Here's a couple of "how to's"

Honda dealer doesn't want to touch it and wouldn't even give an estimate.

I found more info and am giving credit where it's due:

Here's the expensive but complete version with pictures:

And here's the more affordable version:

Here in the Dallas area we see a lot of egr ports clogged. I would say we do at least 4-5 port cleanouts a week. The 96-97 rl's have a warr. extension that will cover this at no charge up till 150k . Other year models are out of warr. @50k miles.

The cleanout can be done without any parts needed, the intake does not need to be removed. Our techs just lay on top of the engine and reach between the fire wall and the back of the cyl. head to access the egr pipe and port plate. Remove the 4 crossover tube nuts and crossover tube. Then remove the port plate bolts and plate. Then start with a 1/4 inch drill bit in your hand and push the drill bit through the built up carbon in the back of the cyl. head until you break through to the open chamber on the inside of the head. Keep increasing the size of the bits until you have cleaned the round hole completely. You will just twist the bits to "hand drill"
through the carbon. This is tedious work and is why it cost so much. But it is not that bad. Once you have it all back together, you'll need the code cleared from your system by a code scanner available just about anywhere that sells tools

my link was no good

The link I attached above was truncated for some reason and I'm having trouble getting a valid one to display

Go to acura world dot com/forums (remove spaces)

Then add this to the link: /f40/diy-egr-intake-manifold-cleaning-68465/

Why is this site biased against the website I mentioned above?
