I am just wondering why my check engine light blinks after I start my car....

A buddy at Acura said that they always do that, but I never noticed it before....it blinks 5-8 times, haven't counted yet, when I first start my car up. The Battery Light, Brake, and all the other lights that usually are on go off and the maint required light will blink for a bit....is this normal?
