Auxiliary in the RL

Anyone have an auxiliary port in the RL? What do we need to do to install one? I'd like to get a headphone jack input for GPS, phone for pandora and for the ipod.

Anyone done it?

Is it possible to just get something like this?

Would it work if I just unplugged the CD changer in the back of the radio and plugged this in or do I need some kind of an adapter?

^ never mind. I don't think that'll work. It needs an actual brain.

OK

Ima go at this simple.

The 2004 is actually pretty simple. If you want an aux in, or an ipod connection its as simple as purchasing a module that replaces the xm plug in the back of the radio.

Theres actually a newer module that will allow you to keep the xm and use the plug for it for the aux/ipod input by switching between the 2.

The 96-03 RL NON-Nav is also pretty easy. You simply plug in a module in the back of the radio where the cd changer usually goes. You will lose your cd changer, but you can gain your aux input or ipod control.

Now the 96-03 non-nav might not be listed as far as compatible with some manufactureres or websites, but basicly what you need is a regular Honda 8-pin din connection. It came standard on many mid 90's Honda products.

Now for the 96-03 RL WITH NAV it gets a little harder.

There are currently NO plug and play adapters for us. The reason being is that the nav models use a strange configuration 12 pin din cable. Ive seen this configuration on older fm modulated cd changers and extension modules for Kenwoods Pioneers etc. I belive this cable was phased out by manufactureres in favor of the BUS type (ai-net) cables that currently Sony/Alpine etc etc use to connect their head units to cd changers and expansion packs

Dont feel sadened if you do have a 96-03 with nav RL. There is hope. Now even though the nav versions use a different 12 pin connector cable they only use 8 of the actual wires in the cable.

From what I have found out the connections are exactly the same minus the connector end type. What this means is that if you know the color code or the pinout of the cd changer cable on the nav models you can wire in an aux in module or ipod module through the cd changer port like the non nav model RL's.

I have yet to finish this, but my plans are to make a module that will let me add an ipod connection module through the cd changer port, while still being able to switch back to cd changer when I please via solid state type switch. Havent started on this, but when I get it all figured out I'll post up the info or how to of sorts.

Any more questions.

Hey would you happen to know where I can find the new module that will allow for me to keep the xm and switch between both aux and xm?

Old Hatch, thank you for finally chiming in. What took you so long!?

Thanks a lot, you know where I can find a cheap 8 pin connector?

Is this basically my cheapest option? This should work, right?

I dont remeber the brand off the top of my head, but its the second or third generation interface. Check the TL forum. should be the same module as the 04 TL and MDX.

sorry i cant be much help, but its not something I researched heavily.

No I don't have OEM Nav. I just found that unit on eBay for $46, I think I'll go ahead and order it.

I'm really surprised this topic didn't come up for the RL before. There is a ton of info for TL's, TSX's, Cl's, etc.

I'll take some pics of the install and make a DIY.

Thanks for your help hatch.

Does it matter that the model description only goes up to 01's? Will it work in my 02?

No it doesnt matter. Its the typical honda pinout. Its slightly different than the Alpine 8 pin.

Check this link

That's cool you have been a big help on several occasions. I was able to find the right adaptor via the website the original poster used....

Other forums don't count!

I'll order the kit tomorrow. Thanks again for your help. Hopefully next weekend I'll have some time to install it. The GPS should be here Wednesday. I made a play list today. 1058 songs so far. Need to pick up a 8 gig SD card this week sometime.

Hey, is that wood grain center piece in there just held in by clips? I don't want to pull anything back that'll crack anything.

4 clips across the top.

Basicly you need to pull the bottom out first at an angle and then try to pop off.

Be very carefull as the clips are very easy to brake and the only way to get them back is to use plastic epoxy.

Sounds similar to the TL. I don't even know how many times I've taken that thing apart.

Thanks.

The TL is MUCH MUCH easier though. I can disassemble that car in minutes as opposed to hours

Ken! You've been MIA.

Yeah, the TL is pretty simple.

I'm looking forward to this DIY, GPS should be arriving tomorrow, I just hope the PIA adapter makes it by EOD Friday.
