96 Acura RL top speed

Hi everyone, I have a 96 Acura RL and i was wondering if anyone knew what the governor is on that. I reached 142mph but couldn't push it any further, because traffic didn't allow to do so. I bet the car can do more than 142, because it was still accelerating as i was going 142.

You were doing 142 mph in a 1st gen RL in TRAFFIC???

For one I have a '97 TL with 230+ hp and I can do 145 at most. (I do so on a closed track)

For two: Your car is not meant for those speeds... do you know what speed your tires are rated for?

Just think about that. I know you're 18 and all, but I dont want your killing yourself or anyone else. Be careful.

Well....

It wasnt' heavy traffic at all. It was just that all 3 lanes of the highway I was on were taken by not more than 5 cars and I had to slow down. My tires are rated at 106mph and that is why I don't want to go that fast again to find the top speed, even thought they could probably handle more than 106.

Well...I did do 142 and I am not sure how.

I know my car is not meant for speed and I am careful about what I'm doing with it and where I'm doing it.

Thanks for your reply and your concerns!

I just had my 99" Rl going 150ish last I looked down I was going 150. My tires are rated for this. The only reason I did it was to smoke some jackass kid in a Pontiac GTP.

Speed Demons

This car obviously wasn't made for speed so you guys must of been on a 1 mile straighaway, since the RL accelerates like a turtle. The 1st generation RL's engine displaces 3.5 liters due to a 7mm increase in stroke, but despite that increase in displacement, output actually only 210 hp. The torque did however increase from previous legends with only 206 pound-feet at 5,000 rpm to 224 pound-feet at 2,800 rpm — a 9 percent gain at 2,200 fewer rpm.

Unless you guys tweaked out your cars, or started using some type of jet rocket fuel, you're not getting much more than 210 hp. Sorry to break it to you guys. If you guys want speed from an Acura, you're better off getting a standard 3.2TL Type S or soop up that RSX Type S if you can fit in it.

My engine has a few mods. I am running with an intake, dual exhaust(quiet free flow), New injectors, and a tuned ecu. Its no vette but it isnt a turtle either. I can afford those other cars easy but I am 6'8" 255, there is no way in heck that i could fit in a RSX, or TL. Also if you wanna go fast I live in Northwest Ohio, everything is strait and flat here.

Talking Here's the deal...

I haven't been on the forum in a while, but I did some research and found out that my tires are actually rated at 168MPH. The car reaches 125 like it's nothing....I don't see why it can't do more than 142 on the right road. I found out that it is not governed by flooring it on ice with the parking brake engaged. I reached about 180mph which is the red line (6000rpm). hehehe

I know some of you guys say that 210hp is not that much, but it's not that little either. I can take many cars on the road....maybe not as much on the start, but overall, I will smoke them. . The easiest might be V6 mustangs. lol. They're pathetic.

Doncarlos, my car is completely stock and I am telling you I can reach more than 142. Believe me, I would rather drive a TL, but I don't have the funds to afford one at this point of time. I got a slick deal on my RL, so I'll stick to it for now. I will get it up to more than 142 as soon as I get a chance to and I'll let you guys know what happened.

Peace, -Boz

We can bounce.

Yeah, a V6 Mustangs are pathetic, and you can beat any stock 5.0 with any stock V8 Camaro any day.

Forget the TL, I rather have my pimped out RL with the much smoother and comfortable ride. I'm just saying that the standard TL Type S has some boogies.

If you wanna add some hp, I think Ken was the one that said that you can put a legend head on our 3.5L to get roughly 50 extra hp.

Oh yea, big green acura, no wonder. Acura is just a well-built car and the fact of the matter is that American Cars suck!! There's a kid that goes to my school (college) that drives a Camaro and after class we race and I smoke his ass every time. He doesn't even try anymore cause he doesn't want to get embarrased. What's the car you use for racing anyway?

Doncarlos, the RL is a smoother ride, but when it comes to cournering and stiffness the TL wins especially the Type-S. Sometimes my RL starts shaking when I take a curve at a higher speed and I'm not talking a sharp curve. I'm talking about the road curving slightly. My mom's Camry would be able to take that same turn going 100+ while I have to go less than 60 to keep the car from shaking.

BMW M3 is the racer. Dinan under the hood! Haha my old Chevy SUV can smoke most of GM's new line. But it does have a 350 motor rated at 350+hp and 400+ftlbs. The 20x10 tires also help keep it planted. My dad's jetta tdi smokes alot of domestics. It had some diesel upgrade think that raised hp from 90 lol, to about 200. I dont know the specifics. It has mad torque though with 4 wheel drive.
