96 Acura RL - ABS and TCS lights came on at the same time!!

I have a 96 Acura RL 3.5. A few days ago as I started to drive home from work the ABS and TCS (traction control) lights both came on within 10 seconds after they went off as the car was started.

Is there any hint as to the problem if both these lights have come on at the same time? I have read elsewhere in this forum that a driver had a problem where a owner had similar problem but that lights would come on after about 10 miles of driving. The "drivers side rear speed sensor" was faulty in this case. Is there any way I can check if I my cause is the same?

And just waht is the "driver side rear speed sensor"?

Thanks

George

Well the TCS uses ABS to operate, so it's normal for them to come on together. My bet is speed sensor.

Yep, vehicle speed sensor. Its simply tells the car's computer how fast a particular wheel is moving. In the case of the RL, it has at least 2, sometimes 4. (depending on whether it has vehicle stability assist or not)

In your case, you have 2 speed sensors in your RL premium.

Hi everyone I have the same problem ,the question was also asking is there a way of testing each sensor, is there a resistance range the sensors should be within or what would be the method of checking in your backyard my RL is a premium 97 ? Does the 97 have 2 sensors as well or does it have 4 ?

How easy is it to replace? Are there any pictures or on-line help out there?

Not sure what the resistance range is, you'll need an RL shop manual handy. I'm away from home for the next few days.

The '97 has two sensors since it does not have VSA.

Fairly easy to replace, there may be a DIY in an Acura Legend forum. Very similar if not identical process.

I thought it had 4.hmmmm. I had both of my rear ones go bad on my 96. It isnt that daunting of a task....besides the fact that the hole the sensor fits in gets smaller from corrosion and witchcraft. Both times ive had to replace mine i ended up having to pound out the sensor because it seperates itself from the mounting bracket.

Download the service manual pdf. A tip when installing it is to take a circular file and file the hole the sensor sits in. I know my sensor wouldnt go in all the way and i broke it when trying to take it back out. So if you grind down the hole a little bit...just enough to get the corrosion out and out a little grease on the sensor it should slide right in.

there's a service connector for the abs tc on the earlier RL's it sits behind the glove box. Get the manual, jump the connector, and the blinking code will tell you what's wrong
