Angry Tech package stereo speakers blowing

Is anyone else having problems with their stereo blowing door speakers? My 09 RDX with tech has blown three so far. They have blown at different times and in no specific order. What I mean by blown is they get very crackly almost like static.

but the ELS won edmunds sound system testing!!!! lol

yea - many issues with blown speakers (ELS & base) - if under warranty, yes its a bitch, but just get it replaced, not much you can do unless you want to change out the speakers

I had to replace the driver side upper speaker close to the side view mirror a few weeks ago on my 08 Tech.

My wife noticed the blown speaker before I did because she listens to more FM and it sounded worst compared to XM.

I bought my 07 last March. It was previously a lease vehicle and the driver's door mid-speaker was blown. I got that fixed under warranty, bought the extended warranty before going over 50k mi. and then the mid in the D-pillar passenger side blew! So I feel your pain. I got both fixed under factory/extented warranty (respectively) and was on my way... I just don't rock-out near as loud anymore...

Just out of curiosity, are any of you experiencing any pops or clicks when placing or answering calls with handsfreelink? I had my '07 driver's side door speaker go, and I suspect it was due to all the loud speaker-killing type pops and clicks while using handsfreelink with my Moto Razr. I posted the question here, and a few people responded with the same. I have since moved to another phone, and I no longer get all the pops and clicks.

Here's the discussion:

Yeah, I get a pop or click sound when using the hands free and I'm on Verizon. It's no big deal as it works perfect after the initial click or pop. As for the audio system, mine, so far, has been flawless. I have the base (non-ELS) but it still kicks a*s. I jam it up loud sometimes with a good song on XM or CD or MP3 and all sounds great!

How did they determine that your speakers were blown? I had mine in and they say that they're fine, but I play music with heavy bass and I can hear it.

I had the same problem with my TSX left front speakers. It sounded blown when I played the iPod with songs with heavy bass. I did not hear the distortion on XM/FM/CD. The dealership told me the same thing "turn down your bass".

I figure there is something wrong with the speaker because I don't hear the distortion on the other speakers. I'm out of warranty now; I'm just going to upgrade the speakers sometime this year.

the reason why u may not be able to get the same level of distortion from XM/CD/Radio is because the level is not high enough to go outside the range the speakers can handle.

The line level from at least the iPod Touch is much higher, so w/volume on 20, i get comparable loudness like playing a CD on 30....this is neither a good nor bad thing....in fact, i like the increased level because i can really crush the sound system and just turn the bass down, at least i can get more volume from it, however, the system is maxing out with all it can handle at a certain point and dealing w/distortion - so if you are really pumping your ipod, the speakers are getting overloaded and cant handle it -

XM , at least since ive had the car has neither the signal quality nor volume level to produce such distortion, unless maybe u have the bass +5/6 and volume over 35 or something like that

to sum it up - what you are hearing from your ipod is pure distortion due to line level increase and why you wont hear as much from other sources

Also keep in mind it could be the amplifier "clipping" meaning the amp is being pushed beyond its useful limit hence sending spiked signals to the speakers cauing distortion. Clipping is very bad for speakers as it can push the speaker cone's physical movement beyond its travel limits and permanently damage or kill the speakers.

Will upgrading the speakers help with distortion and/or clipping or do you need to invest in an amp also?

good sounding system has all to do with pairing the right components/correct equipment

if the stock amp is being pushed to its limits, or not even to its limits but out of its harmonic range = distortion, regardless of speakers

will better speakers be better? probably

you need an amp with sufficient headroom and speakers that can handle power output @ a higher flow and not just buy on quoted peak power handling (which is sort of a meaningless standard when buying speakers)

hopefully this helps? im really trying to dumb down technical language

This helps a lot! I've never been completely satisfied with the sound from the TSX or RDX sound system. The system plays fine for XM/FM/CD; but, you can really hear its limitations with higher quality iPod tunes. I haven't tried DVD-A in the RDX, I have a hard time finding music worth purchasing in the DVD-A format.

In the meantime, I can turn down the bass and start looking to upgrade the speakers w/ amp.

if ur going to do an amp, what you really want is a higher rated amp w/more power than what you think youd actually want. Having adequate power will create the sound environment you are seeking, and the speakers you pick to compliment the amp, imo, dont have to be AS important (but still very important!) as the quality of the power that is driving them...

I have the same problem - both drivers and rear passenger speakers are blow. I think that the problem due to high volume music lestening. DTS CDs especially but the price is about 18 bucs per one speaker, so it is not so high price of music enjoying

Interesting. 2G TSX owners are experiencing a lot of problems with blown speakers as well, I think mostly in tech models.
