Wheel upgrade

Hello All,

I recently purchased a 09 RDX and came across this community where I have learned a few things. With that, I thought I share an upgrade I made to the RDX.

I changed out the wheel with a 20 inch Vertini Regency rims. The size of the rim is 20 x 10 with a +35mm offset. I installed Hankook Ventus ST RH06 (275x40x20). Below are two comparison pics between stock and upgraded wheels. (Note: the RDX was not parked on a level surface, so, the gap between the wheel-well and the tire may not be true. I realized the error of where I parked the car after I took the OEM pictures but decided to use the same spot for relative comparison before and after the wheel upgrade.)

A few things share about this install:
  • The front rims barely, I mean barely clear the brake calipers. I had the wheels mounted at a local tire store and they would not install it as the clearance between the back of the spoke and the brake calipers was "paper thin". So, I took the wheels to a custom car shop where they specialize in performance and high end mods as they had spacers. However, they suggested that with the clearance, I would be OK. So, 5 days later, it's been good so far.
  • With the new wheels being wider, the wheel now extends to the end of the fender. In fact, it may extend out a bit beyond.
  • The ride appears to be "smoother" and quiter with the new tires.
I hope this helps anyone who is considering upgrading the wheels to 20s.

PS - Other mods/upgrade thus far: changed the front lower spoiler with the upgrade kit and installed K&N filter.

PS #2 - Next, will be to install the Eibach springs to lower the the car. Currently, the gap in the front is just under 3 inches with the new wheel. With the new springs, it will lower to about 1.5-1.8 inches. (Can't recall the gap in the rear.) I'll post pictures after the install in the next 1-2 weeks.

Not trying to offend you but those rims you put on just don't look right on the RDX. Honestly I don't know what car or suv they would look good on.

Hi,

No offense taken. I realize that modifications are subjective and each person has their own "tastes". Besides, I prefer the larger spoke design as they are easier to clean then say rims with many more spokes :-)

maybe its the 275 that doesnt look right, not sure, u got a 40 for profile, but that thing looks like a tank!

i wouldnt call the MRR's "amazing" id say they are an improvement, but they show way too much of the skimpy brakes & rotors to look amazing without some further mods.

20" wheels can make your rotor look small, here's a picture of 19" wheels from ronjon

its the style of the rim im talking about, not the size of the gap...the thin spokes accent a very small brake/rotor on our truck.

Hi MMike1981,

Ha, tank. That is a good adjective to use. Actually, I wanted a more agressive look so I went with the Regency. The other option I considered was the Riviera-S model (http://www.vertiniwheels.com/images/...a/riviera.html). However, I decided against it as it would make the RDX look "fancier" as my 11-yr old son put it and after all, RDX is a SUV (albeit is a street SUV) thus wanted to stay with agressive look. Besides, trying to clean the Riviera-S rims would have been a pain. :-o

Also, what I like about the Vertini's are the deep dish look. Again, subjective but I like the deep dish.

If you like the deep dish you most certainly got it.

To me that aspect of your rims just looks off on the RDX. Especially with the 40 profile. Did you think of going 30 profile? even 35 might make it look a little better. 40 is just a lot for deep dish 20inchers.

Hi,

I did consider 30 and 35. However, I wanted to keep the wheel diameter as close at or above the original wheel to keep the gap between the top of the tire and the wheel-well to a minimum. The 40's put the overall size something like 103% of the original. Although I plan on installing the Eibach springs, I wanted to reduce the gap as much as possible.

Also, as much as I like low profile wheels, I'm not a big fan of SUV's with real thin profiles. I would venture to say that 35s would likely not have been too thin but all the purchases were done online so I didn't get a chance to see what it looks like in real world. So, I decided to go with the larger tire. (Also, I realize that I am not very good at seeing things online and how it will look in real.)

That being said, I may consider going with 35s in the future after I see what the new springs will do to the look.

Thanks

MRRs HR-2s look the best, IMO. Too bad I never installed my set. They are for sale (see my sig).

Hey just finished reading this thread and im glad i found someone else with a x10 +35 offset setup. And thank you!!!! for posting your tire size and info about clearance. much appreciated.

I am going to be going to buy my tires very soon.
My rims are the Zinik Z21 19x10 +35 offset
Not sure what brand of tire I will be buying but it will most likely be 265/40/19 size.

Thanks again

PS: kimck99 can you repost your pictures of your before and after. They don't seem to be working on the thread. Thanks.
