Tires and ride

The rubber on my 2010 are Michelins but seem to not have much tread left. What's there is worn evenly but just not very deep. It's not dangerously low but with 20k miles I would think there would be more tread, especially if the tires are meant to go 50k.

Is this the way these are meant to be driven, and when the time comes for replacing can I use a size that's not so low profile and takes the bumps better?

You guys have probably discovered alternate sizes that perform well and with a smooth ride, without losing handling.
