Headlight HID light bulb replacement
Headlight HID light bulb replacement
Sorry can't post pics, but I was looking for info on the HID bulb replacement and couldn't find one so thought I would post.
I wanted to go with a more blue light so I purchased 12000k blue light HID bulbs on Ebay for about $30 bucks shipped.
First step is to remove the front bumper. There are 6 clips on Top, 2 screws in each wheel well, 1 screw on each far side underneath, and I believe 8 clips underneath. Simply remove the clips by using 2 flat tip screwdrivers and pring the center circle out of the larger circle by putting equal pressure on each side. If you pry to hard you will break the clips so either be careful or have a few spares. The bumper is attached on the sides to the the wheelwell with some tonge and groove type clip, so just carefully pull and it will come off. Make sure to disconnect the power wires to each fog light before setting it down as there is not much slack.
Next you must remove each light assembly. There are 2 10mm bolts on the top and 1 clip. There is then one 10mm bolt underneath on the front side and 1 10mm bolt on the far (by the wheel well) outside. On the front inside (facing the radiator) there is another clip.
You can now start to remove the light assembly. I recommend disconnecting each power wire to the daylights, parking lights, and blinkers.
You can then remove the whole assembly. On the back side, where the headlight bulb is you will have to unscrew a black plastic protective cap (it is about a 1/4 turn to disconnect) This keeps it weathertight.
Next, disconnect the white connector (slips off) lead from the top of the assembly.
Then unclip the bulb holder (it is just a wire clip that you press down and move outward). it holds the bulb securely in place. Twist the bulb unit counter clockwise about an 1/8 of a turn and it comes out. You have now removed the HID bulb. Simply reverse everything to put the new bulb back in. Remember not to touch the bulb fillament and handle with care as it is very tender. You can look at the Kelvin code to determine what color of lighting you want. I checked my 12000k out tonight and it gives off a light blue look from the outside but still gives great visibility from inside. Hope this helps someone.

Ha Ha, my eyes are not that great. From the drivers seat it is not as much noticable as the outside, but I like it better anyway.
Question for you, I am thinking of replacing the fog lights with an HID kit (about 40 bucks on ebay). Does it usually look okay to do the same color as the headlights, or go with something different. Compated to the HID headlights, the stock fog lights look horrible.

Im trying to see if I can do this without removing the bumper, is there a torx screw on the black plastic protective cap?

Looks great... thought of puttinga set on for my fogs too. then I remember my physics stuff
blue wavelength light penetrates a much shorter distance than other colors... that is why manufacturers of fogs make yellow fogs...
if you don't care about functionality, and prefer looks over that, then it is a good buy... but don't depend on your blue fogs to do much in a dense fog...

And jabboy, there is no torx screw on the protective cap. It is just screw on. It was a little difficult to jar loose the first time, so i just used a rag. I don't see how you can do this without removing the bumper to be honest with you. But believe me, removing the bumper is really easy (especially now that ive done it about 5 times)
Just buy a set of replacement D2S bulbs in the color range of your choice!
Stock = 4300k
Whitest and brightest = 5000k
Very slight hint of blue but very bright = 6000k

Thanks for the post. No wonder the OM says let the dealer do it.
may belong in a different thread - but wondering if anyone has any advice. It seems that one of my projectors is turned counter clockwise a little bit -- which screws up the cutoff on both sides. I've tried rotating the whole assembly a bit (there's some play to it if you unscrew the top two screws), but can't get the result I want.
@droebuck -- when you take the assembly off and unscrew that protective black cap -- does it look like you can adjust the projector itself?

It didn't look like it to me. I had to work to get the bulb out of there and nothing moved so I am inclined to say no. I believe that you should just use the adjusting screws on the outside to do that. Not sure if there is a thread on headlight adjustment or not, but you should do a search on it--probably in this DIY section.
