Does anybody know how to remove the silver grille trim pieces? Or know if they can even be removed separately from the bumper at all? I would like to paint them black, and need to remove them to do so.

I painted mine black. You'll need to remove the bumper to access the hardware to disassemble the bottom part of the grille. It's not hard and will take you 10-20 mins.

Just be careful not to damage any of the hardware (one of them attaching the top part of the grille to the hood snapped and I had to improvise).

Also, you'll want to take your time to sand and primer since the grille is subject to rocks that may cause chipping. I didn't and mine started chipping so I had to do it over.
