Replace receiver/CD unit with digital media receiver?

Hi! I was wondering what sort of wiring harness and setup the lower unit on my shiny, beloved 07 non-Tech that's new to me uses. Would it be possible at all to replace, perhaps, the receiver/CD unit with a digital media receiver? I saw some videos for installing the aftermarket Iphone adapter and stuff. I'm considering going for an install of the HON3 myself. I'm a first time Acura owner; is this significantly harder, fundamentally, than swapping out the head unit in my prior vehicle (Jeep Wrangler). The lower unit looks, at least, like it's a pretty standard double-height radio.

Are you planning on installing it yourself? If, so I would get a dash kit. Most of our parts are put in the pretty snug. I'm sure it is very possible to swap out the head unit, just need to measure and/or search on crutchfield.com

Not necessarily. I don't particularly want to do something stupid. However, a couple YouTube videos seems to suggest it's very easy to remove that lower unit, the receiver/CD player. I'm wondering if there's any way to adapt the wiring without going deeper into it, in order to, as you say, swap out the head unit?

Yeah, I would measure this area and search for a head unit if that's what you are going for. It looks like the size of one of those mid sized head units that could fit in there.

I found this video on YouTube and frankly, if it /generally/ fits, it looks like a double DIM would fit in there. And the process looks pretty darn simple.

Might be a 1.5 DIN though.

It does look pretty close if not 1.5 or maybe even a 2 DIN.

So it looks like the HVAC controls are routed to the display through the radio. i suppose I'd have to find and uh...hmm, it's probably unlikely that anything after market is compatible with the display, right?

Well another option is a OEM integration. It allows you to run after market speakers and subs with an amp.

Well, it was more the options on the display and such. I'm quite happy with the quality. Plus, who has CDs? Why are these things installed in cars made after 2005?

In any case, after investigation, I'm just not going to touch it, because I don't want to ruin the HVAC controls, and I kind of like the text-only display - I feel like its look dates slower. Anyway, I'm rigging up a rearview mirror backup camera, smartphone mount, and Bluetooth integration, and trying to do it all for under $250! I found a refurbished iSimple SH651 for $84, I've made the perfect phone mount for $16, and found the nightvision backup camera and rearview mirror unit on Amazon for a total of $78. I'm planning to hitch the camera power up to the backup lights

Here is a good link if you decide to take on the task of replacing the cd unit. Look up Your Car to see what Car Stereo fits in it
I have an 07 w tech, and I installed an hd radio adapter and video, (all plug and play parts into the factory system, Similar to HON3 you wrote about.
If you have any questions reply to thread, PM me, or email the install guys from the link.
I would suggest keep the brackets from the factory head unit, you can usually reuse w aftermarket units.

I too would like to upgrade the factory system but because of the controls for climate to the main dash screen, I have not messed with it.

I found this when I was digging around online. It seems like it would work great but the price tag is very high.

The price tag is high but not insane, really. Particularly if it's a DIY swap.

I've asked them a question of how it would work with the non-Tech. I wonder if it would be possible to get a salvaged Tech display or something, a new aftermarket head unit, this, and have a seriously pimped system. But then again, it does seem like smartphone integration is superior to a screen, so I'm really curious about how that little guy might work with the awesome Back to the Future LCD display that I've grown to love.

It can be done. Here is a video of a guy controlling the non-tech RDX screen with that GA-NET+ converter box.
