08 Tech: Does navigation supports TTS?

Hi,

Does 08 Navigation system speaks street names, like 'Turn right on Main St'? if yes, how can I enable the TTS (TextToSpeech)?

Thanks!

It does. It was on by default--not sure about setup.

Somehow, my default setting (female voice) doesn't prompt street names, it simply says 'Turn Right ' etc.

Assuming the '07 and '08 nav systems are the same, mine speaks the larger roads and highways, but it doesn't seem to speak the smaller street names. My wife's Garmin speaks more streets. If there a setting to change it, I'd be interested as well.

Today only I have started playing with GPS, so far I didn't try on highways. I too have Garmin, yes it speaks small roads but RDX doesn't.

I think you can change the setting by making the "route guidance setting" set to maximum...I remember on the TSX, you needed to change some kind of setting to maximum so it would prompt you more..then it started to state street names.

Ah yes, but does it do the trick? Does it now say the small street names?

Saw this thread and just went out and tried it... and yes, with the prompts set to max, all the street names are read out at 800 meters and 400 meters (metric - I'm in Canada). But the last prompt just says take the next left turn etc. without naming the street.

This post would be more helpful if you told us what prompt level you had set. I have a 2007 as well, NOT set on max, 4.55 nav disc, and mine doesn't speak all street names. I'm going to try setting the prompt level to max when I go out...

I have been driving an Acura for 4 years and I never knew this was possible. Learn something knew everyday.

Wow. I'm guessing you wouldn't be a very good Batman then. "Holy cow! Look what I just found on my belt! I wish I had known about it before I jumped off this building!"

The "max" setting for the GPS is how often it gives you a warning before you actually make a turn. It doesn't change whether it tells you the "smaller" roads or not. Based on my experience it'll name the major highways or roads but not the smaller streets. I don't believe there is a way to change this.

If someone has found this to be different could you reference what DVD version you have? I have the second to latest one so maybe the latest version has made this change.

I switched mine to max a few days ago to confirm what was said above, and it has made no change. It still doesn't read the smaller streets, only major roads and highways. My wife's Garmin wins once again.

Strange...when I switched to max I got all the streets in my neighbourhood (I'm on a country-lane dead-end) and I didn't get any of them on the factory default.

So let's start diagnosing...I've got a 2007, and I'm running Nav disk version 4.55. How about you? I'm wondering if they changed things when they created 4.62 and removed the male voice - maybe they made more room for a TTS engine?

You have to set route guidance to "max". This also enables TTS. It's not very clear that you have to do this.

What am I missing? Isn't this what we've been talking about for the last few days?

Net...it doesn't work.

i'm on 4.62 and it works. even says smaller streets although there is a bit of a delay between directions and "on xxxx street". same as ppl above, set voice guidance to MAX. have had mine for over a year now and just finding this out now...haha.

Refer page 83 of the 08 RDX navigation manual. It says "uses street name in guidance phrase" about 1/2 mile and 1/4 mile before the turn, but not just before the turn, if Guidance prompts set to Max.

I have noticed that there is clear difference (at least TTS) between Normal and Max setting and it speaks around 90% of the street names. I am on version 4.62.

I'm not sure I like the "Max" option though because doesn't that also repeat the directions a lot more as well? I have it on "Min" so it only gives me a command 1 mile out then 1/4 mile out. I believe at max it gives you a command at 2 miles, 1 mile, then 1/4 mile which is too much for me. I don't have access to a manual right now so can't confirm this.

Wow - so maybe there is some advantage of going to 4.62 after all! That's kinda cool. Thanks guys!

Hmmm interesting. I'll have to check my version. My wife has my car today. I bought my RDX in March '08 so not sure what version they would have in the car at that time.

Well....I take back my previous comments. I did some additional testing today. Strangely enough, the TTS worked. It looks like (as silly as it sounds) rebooting the system by turning the car off and on brought it to life. Yesterday I drove around a bit after changing the guidance mode to max, with no success. Today it's working...

Go figure...

a bit off topic, but another reason i like 4.62 is that it has the gas station logos instead of the same gas pump icon for all...very useful for finding your preferred station quickly.

4.55 has that too....but apparently for fewer stations. I have them for Mobil, Exxon, Shell, etc...
