Oil Filter

Does anyone know what the oil filter bypass valve pressure range should be for the K23 engine? Or what it is on the standard Honda 15400-PLM-AO2 filter?

It appears that Fram makes the Honda filters and there are better choices out there provrded the bypass pressure is right.

You really don't want to put a Fram filter on an RDX. If you want some more opinions about this, go to Bobistheoilguy.com and ask that question over there - and put your flame suit on.

If you really want a better filter, consider the Honda 15400-PCX-004 filter. This is a higher capacity filter with more filter media than the PLM filter. It's the filter used on the Honda S2000 and NSX. It will fit well on the RDX.

Another option would be Amsoil EA013 filter. Amsoil makes a great filter.

But if you're hell-bent on using some other filter, look for a filter bypass of around 8-11 psi. Do not use a filter intended for a VW, since their bypass settings are much higher.

What is the price of the OEM filter from Acura parts dept? When I casually asked the parts person I belive they said something like $6.00? For the little difference in price it would seem cheap enough to stick with the OEM.

I checked today and they told me $9.95. I examined the filter and it is made for Honda by Fram (the same filter is available from AutoParts Warehouse listed as a Fram and has a Honda logo).

It is no doubt made to Honda specs ie: metal end caps, silicon anti-drainback valve, etc, but it is still a Fram (see what Slalom says above).

I found a Mobil One M1-110 from Pep Boys for $9.95 and it is much better quality with heavier construction. Oil filters are not something to try to save money on.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into the PCX.

Mobil 1 makes a great filter.

BTW - the PCX filter I mention above is made by Filtech and Toyo Roki, not Fram. I'm sure that the Fram PLM filter is well made, however it doesn't have as much filter media as the PCX filter.

Have you tried using the PCX filter on a RDX ? IIRC, the OEM oil filter for a S2000 or NSX will not fit for part #15400 PLM A02 - the threads are not the same. I know that the NSX filter will not fit properly on a MDX (Pilot/TL/Odyssey) . . .

Thanks for the info guys, I'm going to change the oil this weekend. We are at 5250 miles with 10% remaining.

I'm using Mobil 1 5W/30-EP: 5 qt. jug for $29.95 and the Mobil 1 M1-110EP filter for $9.95.

I'll do a full-service inspection; hoses, belts, fluids, brake lines, calipers, pads, shaft seals, boots, shields, ball joints, linkages and general condition.

I'll measure treadwear, rotate the wheels and hand torque them to 80 ft-lbs.

Total cost of A1 service: $39.90.

Peace of mind knowing my wife's car was not touched by Eddie the drop-out who will fail the next company drug test because he forgot to study: Invaluable.

Time spent under car with 14 year-old son: Priceless.

Aloha Brudda, slight correction - that's 39.90 + tax (it's 8.25% in SoCal).

Just an FYI, Mobil1 filters are made by Champion Labratories (USA). Champion Labs make great filters and also make the oil filters for Bosch, STP & (believe it or not) Walmart's SuperTech brand. Now I'm not saying to use the Walmart filter, but I wouldn't hesitate to use Bosch or STP if you see a good price on them . . .

The PLM and the PCX filter both have 20 x 1.5mm threads. You're right about the NSX - I checked, and found out that it has 22 x 1.5mm threads. Neither filter fit the NSX but both will fit the RDX.

I'm familiar with these filters because I also have a Honda S2000, and I just got rid of a Civic. I've used both of these filters on the Civic at different times.

^^^ Thanks for the tip on the PCX filter - I may have found my new OEM oil filter. Now lets see if my supplier has them at a reasonable price . . .

Hi, I will be changing the oil soon and have a couple a questions. According to what I have read, the 15400 PLM A02 filter is not so good, I've been trying to find an online place to buy the 15400 PLM A01 buy cant find anyplace to buy them. Anyone know where I can get these? Or maybe the mobile1 m1-110 filter? Also, is a new crush washer needed when I replace the filter?

I'll assume you meant the crush washer on the drain plug. It's usually good for 3 to 5 oil changes provided you don't over-torque it.

I used a Mobil One 110 filter for my first service and it will be coming off soon. I'll cut open the original Honda filter and the Mobil One and post results and pics of the filter internals soon.

Go with Napa Gold or Mobil1.

Also Honda filters are made by fram.

Is the 15400 PLM A01 actully a better filter?

That is the one from the TL, and I was surprised that they switched to the 02 on the RDX.
I recall buying my first 01 when I was changing the oil on a CL type S and they gave me this dinky filter. The parts guy at Acura said that all Acuras were moving to the 01 filter, and the older larger filter that the CL type S had was no longer being used.

I would think that if they switched to a different filter on this RDX that it would be terr, not worse.
The oil changes are certainly more frequent than on the TL as indicated by the oil life monitor. On the TL I was changing at about 6K mile interval and it still indicated more than 30% life. ( I am old school 3K per oil change guy, and its a hard habit to break)
This car hit just over 4K miles and went to 15% and turned on a mtce reminder message.

By the way, I get the oil filter and a washer from Continental Acura for about $9 including tax, and that includes a ball point pen they give you at the cashier. ;-)

Recommend you replace the crush washer every time. The cost of washer replacment is minor compared to the risk of an unknown leak caused by a damaged reused washer.

Absolutely, that is the most conservative and safest answer.

I was assuming that someone who changes their own oil....would also check it once a week, as well as look under the car occasionally for leaks and damage.

To make the long story short... There are following items that fit good and FRAM sucks, yep?

Honda 15400-PCX-004
Amsoil EA013
Mobil1 M1-110EP

What about the K&N HP-1010 ? It's freely available over amazon.com & is not too costy.

will the Honda 15400-PCX-004 fit on the RDX?

from my understanding that filter will not fit on all k series motors. I know it fits on my h22 and also fitted on my old b20.

Can someone confirm that it fits on the K23?

For some reason I also find myself concerned over issues like which oil filter to use on this car. Why? How long do we all plan on keeping this car anyway? I use the factory Fram manufactured filter which I got for $3 each from a dealer in Temecula. If I use this filter over the course of the 50 of 60 thousand miles I own this car am I going to be disappointed? Some of us probably do plan on keeping the car longer which these type of issues will matter. I use only the best I products I can find on our other car which I never plan on trading. Sorry for rambling, just something to think about.

In my opinion there is no need to buy high end oil filter for RDX. The OEM filters you can buy on internet for $5.15 each.
The only time you need a good oil filter when you plan to go for extended oil change intervals 6K+ miles. On my Acura 2001 I use Mobil 1 oil filter because I change my oil once a year or every 10K miles (I use Mobil 1 EP).
On RDX, oil changes come every 3-4K miles, and its a waste to buy $10 filter....

I like the cost of the Fram if they also make the Honda one. You can get the oil at Wallymart for around $22 for a 5 qt jug and the filter for $3 something. Add the washer and tax you are under $28 bucks!
