Interesting observation about Mobil 1 oil

Went to walmart yesterday and stocked up on engine oil (both Pennzoil Platinum and Mobil 1, they were still about $20 a 5 qt jug ).

Noticed that the extended performance version for Mobil 1 was not HT-06 certified, while the standard mobil 1 was. Interesting... The extended performance one is $4 more expensive... Since I change my oil every 3-4 months, and never took the engine oil change interval past 3500 miles, I bought the standard mobil 1 instead.

I am just guessing, but long lasting may be made just to do that, not breakdown as fast due to the properties the oil is given. Those properties may not be made to take the excess heat of a turbocharged engine like ours for an extended amount of time. So in short that oil may sacrifice performance to gain time. My.

Oil changes every 3500 miles is a waste of money...I know what everyone will say, but the fact remains that it is a waste....

True... But the MID always show 10% remaining when it was about 3500 miles (~5500 km to 6000 km). And my RDX does about 3500-4000 miles every 4 months. And if I change 3 times a year, $25 for oil and filter (parts, since its DIY), it only works out to $75 a year, which I think is not exorbitant at all, to keep the engine running fairly clean of sludge. We all know that oil is to the engine, what blood is to a human body.
Consider spending the $400 each time you bring your car in to a dealer to "service" it, which includes oil change, check all components, "service" the brakes etc... which I don't do at all... I do all necessary wear and tear maintenance like brakes and coolantt change at a local mechanic; the only real thing I do is the rear differential fluid change, which I do every 2 years at the dealer.
So in brief, I think $75 a year oil change maintenance is not expensive at all...

You might be right, but are you willing to experiment with your $30K car and risk voiding your powertrain warranty? Let us know how your experiment goes.

I agree. M1 extended performance has increased levels of cleaning additives (from mobil1 website). So primary focus is on "clean", which probably comes at a cost of less protection at critical parts/moments. But on the other hand, its a very good oil, and it could be that they did not even bother testing it against HTO6. Its very expensive procedure to test and get certified, that could be another reason we don't see other oils (besides penzoil) having HTO6 cerification.
