Battery Disconnect, Readiness Codes and State Inspection
Emissions readiness codes are proof that your emissons system is functioning. Disconnecting your battery clears all emissions readiness codes that are needed to pass state inspection.
After a battery disconnect you can tell if readiness codes are set by the MIL. Turn the key to ignition II but don't start the engine. The MIL will come on for 15 or 20 seconds. If it then goes off the readiness codes are set. If the MIL flashes 5 times, some of the readiness codes are not set.
The engine will need to be started and stopped several times and the engine will need to reach operating temp in stop and go traffic for 5 to 10 miles to set enough emission readiness codes to pass. Then recheck the MIL before taking it in.
