Question lower car

hey ive got a 97 cl 2.2 and i was wondering what springs to lower my car on....im thinking about getting a 2-2.5 in drop. I dont really want coilovers because I heard that the ride was terrible, but i know that they are adjustable, which is a plus. any advice?

get coilovers, there are a few different kinds, so you can ask which people like better.
using your stock shocks and going 2 to 2.5 inches is not something i would do, as it would put a lot of stress on your shocks.
and by coilovers i mean the ones that have shock and spring assembly all together already, i currently have ksports and i like them
there is a couple other members with tein's, and a couple other ones i can't think of right now
just search the threads for those companies and you should see quite a few different opinions
and welcome to AZine btw, post pics of your car in a new thread on the general 1st gen page, and don't forget to check out the n00b guide for some great info https://acurazine.com/forums/1g-cl-1997-1999-56/%2A%2A%2Anoob-guide-read-first-before-posting%2A%2A%2A-478508/

I also want a "smoother" ride, not sure though. Because I heard that coilovers are so stiff

you don't want to ride that low in the winter or urban areas trust me so get coil overs so you can raise the car come winter.

YOu only need a certain amount of posts, I think it's like 15 or so, keep posting. As for coilovers, some are stiff, some are soft, some have adjustable height, some have adjustable height and stiffness, really depends. I personally recommend Tein Coilovers, because the ride is soft and comftorable, not stiff. Search around and you'll find a lot of different opinions and experieces, I'm on my 5th suspension setup for instance. Also check out the n00b guide that Mitch posted, lots of good info there as well. And Welcome

You can go low, but when someone tells you their suspension is "smooth", it's completely subjective. There's no way to measure smoothness. From my experience, Tein S Tech's ride very much like stock, but it's only about a 1.5" drop. Tein Basic's and SS's get a lot of praise for their ride quality, it might be something you want to consider. Just remember you can't go low and still ride like stock. It's physically impossible. When you shorten the suspension travel, you must have stiffer springs and shocks to compensate. If you don't, you bottom out.

The Tein site shows that their coilovers have a max drop of 2.32" Front and 1.89" Rear. That's in the 2-2.5" range that you're looking for. BlackAck and a couple other members have had Tein's so they can probably give you more info. Just from the photos I've seen, it looks like they actually go lower than that.

I have the SS, but they're very similar to the basics. I actually intended to go basics until a member on here hooked me up with the SS's. But the ride quality on the Teins is second to none, like I said I'm on my 5th suspension setup, but this is the one I'm keepin. I would def recommend the basics, here's my car lowered on the SS, the fronts a little lower than the back in this pic, but I fixed that. No pics with the 18's on yet, but there will be soon.

Coilovers is the only way to go, just for the adjustability and flexibility in ride height and stiffness.

when looking at Tein site they list the 96-00 CL 4 cylinder but do not list the 6 cylinder coil overs, does it matter?

does anyone know the answer on if they have to be for the 3.0 or if the ones tein lists being for 2.2 and 2.3 will work because they do not list any for the 97 cl 3.0. I am guessing they will work since other 3.0's have been lowered and used tein but just want to make sure before I add them to the list of things I want to do

i'm assuming it's the same as the k sport setup, in which you have 2 collars below the spring, and another collar touching the bottom shock body... so if you are saying you can't go any lower, then you're saying all 3 collars are together? the next thing you can adjust is suspension preload, where you are shortening the actual height of the spring with the top most collar and compressing it. but this would change your ride characteristics, so change minimally.
but really i don't know why it would be already out of room to go down, i'm fairly low and i still have quite a number of threads left, an inch or two most likely, and i don't think there is much for suspension preload on them yet
and
^you need them before everyone else finds this thread pictureless, it's a big around here

all these excuses... honestly i'll take a picture soon of some of the roads here.
there was a gravel one i took this week, it had potholes that looked like indentations from a basketball
and i hit them going about 60km/hr
but the car still is doing fine as there is a frame rail that runs underneath the engines of 2.2's, so you have nothing to worry about if you bottom out, i've done it numerous times
the train tracks i hit last year... i hit it so hard my battery cable popped off of my battery (and it was tightened on with a wrench)... no other damage, put the cable back on and tightened it up, and it was good to go
