Unable to shift out of park and brake lights not working.

Today I have been having problems taking my car out of park. It's a 1999 2.3 CL. This has happened in the past a few times but the problem usually went away after i would take my foot off the brake and then press it again. Today, however, it took a considerable number of attempts before it would finally recognize the brake was pressed and you could hear the shift lock click.

I didn't know the brake lights weren't working properly until I looked up the problem online and I found other people having the same problem and suggesting you check to see if the brake lights were working. Well I just went to my car to check and sure enough, the brake lights arn't working when I can't take my car out of park.

Does anyone know which parts I need to replace in the CL to fix this problem. I would really like to fix this myself and avoid going to a mechanic. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There is a switch under your brake pedal that is usually the culprit

This thread is getting old, but I had this problem. I had a blown tail light bulb and the car would not go into gear, without using the over ride. Apparently this is a safety feature. So if your tail lights don't work you can't drive.

I don't know about that, we have a brake light bulb indicator light that goes on when a bulb goes, I've never seen or heard of it not going into gear because of a bulb
