Two issues, one very important right now

98 3.0 CL now at 128K

Old Issue- Check Engine light randomly popping up. The Codes say random cylinder misfire. Cleaned EGR Valve, applied gas and fuel cleaner(possible carbon deposits), distrubutor cap, etc... Also had tuneup (sparkplugs, etc...) For the first 10-15K miles, I must confess I was using too low of an octane. The light comes on far less, but still once in a while. Recently had both air and gas filters replaced, and it hasn't come on since...Outside chance this could have helped. Any info here?

NEW AND MORE IMPORTANT ISSUE- Just like many in this forum. My car is shutting off right while it is riding. The Odometer and RPM's just dropped, and the lights shut off. The Green Ignition light comes on, though. Bit of a "thump" when the car shuts off. Car comes back on after a couple of seconds sometimes, and I have found that jiggling key, OR turning turn signal on (lol) starts car back up (actually hear beeping noise like when you turn the key to start it). However, sometimes I have to pull over as the car just won't start back up. Looks like ignition switch is consensus here...Any other info. I've noticed that it usually happens after 15 minutes or so in the car, and all three times I have been going at least 50mph. Can my above problem have any effect here?

Thanks in advance.

most likely if the key really helps, then its your ignition system which might be recalled for your cl

Yeah it was the ignition switch and there were two open recalls.

The mechanic at the local Acura dealer said the Cylinder Misfire is from reoccuring Carbon deposits in the EGR ports and upper intake.

Agree w/ Skeeter33.

A fault in the EGR valve should set a code for failure to lift or inadequate EGR flow. However, selective or partial EGR manifold and port blockage will cause some cylinders to get too much EG and go too lean causing an engine miss or stumble. This usually occurs when EGR valve first opens about 2000 rpm. On Accords it was called EGR hesitation. It did not set a code on early Accords because they didn't have misfire sensing. A thorough cleaning of EGR manifold and ports should fix your problem.

Acura/Honda keyswitches seem prone to failures. I've heard that carrying too many items (weight) on the key ring contributes to this problem. I find this hard to believe, but have seen this admonition on several occasions from knowledgeable persons.

good luck.

Nope, strictly an amateur. I do have technical training as an engineer.

I learned all my lessons from "school of hard knocks" over the years. By necessity, I perform all significant maintenance on my fleet of 6 cars and truck (Acura 2.5TL, Acura 2.2CL, 94 Accord EX, 1999 Subaru Forester, 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup, and 2001 Toyota Celica), while putting 3 kids through college and vet school.

I find that reading and offering help keeps my diagnostic skills keen,... and I enjoy it to boot.

regards
