transmission filter?
transmission filter?
Hi guys, just joined the forum. I recently purchased a 97 CL 2.2 automatic for $250. My friend that sold it to me said the filter in the tranny is clogged with sediments and thats why the tranny is malfunctioning. The car only has 130K on it and was driven by his mom since she got it. My question is, is this filter replaceable? or should i shop for a tranny? has anyone encountered this problem? please let me know. The car runs, just the maintenence light and check engine light comes on. PLEASE HELP!!!
Wrong CL forum...this one is for the 01-03 CL

Wow $250!! Even if you had to rebuilt the tranny, that sounds like one hell of a deal. Sorry to say, but these trannys has multiple filters, most which are not serviceable without taking apart the tranny.
I would take TexasHonda's advice for the check engine light. The maintenance light is a reminder for you to perform maintenance. It's based on mileage and cannot sense if any anomalies with the car.

The black box is the "filter". This is a 3.0 tranny, but basically the same. It is not much of a filter, just basically a screen. The transmission is a closed system. If it happened to be clogged with "sediment" it would have had to come from excessive wear of the internal components. If this is the case, your trans may be junk and is in need of a rebuild. Consider yourself lucky. You have a 2.2 so a replacement trans or trans work will be cheaper than the 3.0. You also have the easiest chassis for a 5 speed swap. Get those codes so we can diagnose the problem better. What color is the fluid? How much metallic debris is on the drain plug?

to what Jim Truett said, if the filter is clogged it's because the tranny is toast. Try changing the tranny fluid and see if there's a lot of metal shavings in the fluid, that would mean that your tranny is chewing gears and clutches. It also would show you if the filter's clogged or not. Ghost our trannies have magnetic drain plugs from the factory
