Tranny troubles

I fear even asking this question...

I have a 1999 CL 2.2 with 152k on it. It has an automatic tranny in it. When it shifts from 1st into 2nd it jumps the rpms about 750 (worse case and not all the time) before it shifts into 2nd. It does this a little bit, bit not learly as bad from 2nd into 3rd.

Called the service at local dealer. He said it is a hard call. Replacing the tranny fluid could bring about more trouble and total failure. He did say he had a guy come in with the same problem and he left and went and bought the synthetic fluid they use in vettes and put it in and it solved his problem.

The way it is driving now is beyond annoying so I sort of don't have much to lose. I mean if it is going to fail it is going to fail... period. I'm hoping that $50 of synthetic fluid will stave off $2k of new tranny.

Thoughts?

I have heard nothing but bad things about changing the fluid once you are already having problems so its a real chance it will make it worse instead of making it better. I would wait until I had the money to change the transmission before I messed with it myself, especially if its the only vehicle you have access to. If you can already afford the trans swap then i say what the heck, go ahead and try it and see if it fixes it. I just wouldn't want to change the fluid and then the car not be drivable anymore and not have the money already ready to get it fixed because riding the bus is no fun in the winter time

it is almost becoming undrivable as it is. i try to baby the heck out of it. i won't have the money to fix it for a long time. have to just eat it on a credit card. literally praying a synthetic swap will help.

well since you will be able to get it fixed (even if its on a credit card) instead of having to let it sit because it no longer will move at all I guess you have nothing to lose and try it and see I guess, but I would get ready to have the transmission swapped and make arrangements for transportation to where ever you have to go while its in the shop like hitching a ride with someone to work if something goes wrong even if you may not need it after you swap the fluid
