on 4cyl, ya always do a water pump when you do a timing belt, the tension from a new belt on a old pump will cause the bearings to fail.
is there a honda/acura shop you could go to instead of the stealership?
$1300 is taxing, does it come with lube and a kiss?

Is there any data on how long before they have actually broken when they were ignored?

I've seen them snap at 8 years and 100k. But then again, I live in Minnesota so the cold probably kills the belt quicker. A timing belt is something you don't want to mess with on an interference engine. If that belt snaps and you bend some valves, the cost of repair goes up dramatically.

make sure you find a reliable mechanic... i snapped a power steering belt and had the shop tell me they need to "check" every valve at $2000 each... out of there minds... this was when i was 16 and im sure that played a part in it but come on...

Exclamation this is not a job for the shade tree

The dealer that I work at would charge about 750.00. so maybe it's the location of that dealer. Some areas are more then others.
Also if you have not done this repair before, i dont think you need to do it yourself. leave it to the pro's.

RE: not a job for the shade tree

I had a very good friend of mine do this for me at 100k (heeding all of the warnings regarding the recommended service). My friend is ASE Master Certified Tech and quite experienced with Honda vehicles. This job took him all of the better portion of a day to do because it is such a tight fit. Certainly it is not a thing you can take risks with as mentioned earlier.
