Sputtering when started

Hey guys - need some help. I tried searching, but what I found was very vague to what my problem is, so I'll try our new Problems thread...

When I started my car this am, it was sputtering pretty bad, dropping down to 4-500 rpms, but never died until I tried to give it some gas to try and get the rpm's up. So of course I tried it again - turned it off, started it back up, and then the same thing happened. The funny thing is, I drove it about 50 miles on the highway on Saturday with no indication of any problems - drove like a dream. I didn't drive it at all yesterday, and now today it's acting up!!

I haven't checked anything out yet - I had to get to work. I'm thinking the obvious first - plugs, wires, cap, rotor, checking battery ground...maybe the fuel filter?

It's a 98 3.0 with only 68k on it.

I've heard some things about a recall on the ignition??? Was the recall for all first gen's? This doesn't seem like an ignition problem though...

Thanks to the replies in advance!!

The recall was for the ignition switch, the key could be removed while the car was in gear. That wouldn't be this. My guess is fuel pump?

a blown head gasket?!! you really think so?!! God I hope it's not that!! I really think it's a fuel filter issue...

I'm going to give her a tune up today - hopefully that'll solve the problem - will post tomorrow with the outcome.

Everyone here - please pray for me that it's not a head gasket!!!

Well I finally figured out what my problem was after I went to Napa to get everything to do a tune-up...NOTHING!!!

That's right, nothing at all. I did some more searching, and it turns out that our cars have really weak fuel pumps...I was parked on steep hill with about an 1/8 or so of a tank of gas - I guess the pump couldn't send up enough fuel.

Thank God nothing major was wrong - I sure was freakin' out there for a while...
