Speedometer Flipped Out

Hi everyone, new to the forums.

Cruising around Vegas in a 97 2.2, she's getting into high mileage, but knock on wood, running pretty nicely...although today was quite strange.

Was driving around 35 down the street, when all of a sudden my speedometer loses it and starts flipping out. I got to where I had to go and then drove around the parking lot and had no speedometer movement at all, and the tach seemed off, so I let it sit while I was at work...went out, and all seems fine..

Hopefully, this was just a one time thing, but if anyone has any idea what might have happened...let me know!

Well, hmm. It was hard to explain. All of a sudden while driving the speedometer just shot down to 0 (was driving 45 or so) and then stayed there, then went up to 80 or so, back down to 0 and kept doing things like that (I maintained around 45) so it was quite strange.

hmm i think i know what you are talking about. I had this happen on my civic once, the speedo cable broke and was going from 0 then up to 80 then just dancing around. But as far as yours doing it, i dont know.

well.. for my case, the needles don't go up smoothly...

u know what i'm saying..? then i smoothly press the gas.. the needle goes smoothly from 0-45... and stops.. and suddenly goes really fast to 60...

also when it goes down, it's same..

what do u guys think the problem is..?

(sorry for the hijacking)

my speedo sensor crapped once. the speedometer needle will either say at 0 or just jump around. it affected shifting too. the dealer fixed it for me for free saying there's an extended warranty/bulletin for it, but that was 2 years ago and i have a 97

call the dealer 1st and see what they say

Mine did it...it was the Alternator. Basically, Had some warning lights (check engine& battery) the day before, made an appt. at the Acura Dealer for the following day, and I almost never made it. Driving to the dealer, the speedo flipped out. (I could tell there was major power issues because nothing really worked (radio, windows, etc.) Anyway, so im driving there and my needles are flipping out jumping up and down and when i'd tap the brakes, they'd fall to 0. On the HWY they said i was goin like 110....it was crazy. I actually stopped at a stoplight, light turned green, (keep in mind im in D4) and I go to hit the gas, and nothing happens....all of the sudden.....SCCHRRREEEEECHHHHHHHHH, (burnout) I was told my car didnt even have enough power to run the fuel pump, and thats what hapened at the stoplight.

Sooo, check your power and Alternator....thats what my problem was...

gauges

i have a 97 cl 3.0 and my whole dash went out.none of the gauges worked.took it in to acura and they said they would have to check all the wiring and could be expensive.i didn't have the cash at the time so it'd have to wait.2 weeks later the gauges came back on.it's been fine ever since, about a year and a half.who knows what happened?it works now and that's what matters.

My accord did the same thing - fell to 0 then wild ass jumps to the actual speed. This was a couple years ago and I'm thinking it was the speed cable. Cheap fix.

Yea, I never actually posted to this thread what was wrong.
I thought it was the sensor, he's got it on and boom, nope. Apparently the actual speedo went bad in there...which of course costs more to replace then the sensor would have...Oh well :-\
