Speedometer issue.....

Hello,
just started to have this issue, did my search on this board, just want to make sure if its the VSS or my cluster itself............
1- the speedometer works fine 20% of the time
2- the other 80% of the time it shoots up to 20mph and stays there seldom it will start working then drops back to 20mph
3- the cruise control works perfect with the speedometer not working, I can increase/decrease speed as well, this makes me believe my VSS is working.
- I have no check engine light and the car runs great, everthing works on the car as it should.
- my car is a 98' 5speed 2.3cl
thanks in advance for the input...........

my vote: speedometer. went bad on my car too; you could even try cleaning out the connections first see if it helps.

Sounds like you might have to replace the cluster. I wonder if there's a way to self test the cluster to see if thats the issue. What I do when I see that issue is drive the car with a scanner connected and see if the vss is sending a signal
