Getting locked in park

a long time ago my 99 cl would get stuck in park and it would take me like 5 times to try and get it out then it went away. and now for the past 3 weeks it wont budge. so i have been having to put a screwdriver in that little whole next to the shifter and push that white lever down. and now all my break lights totally went out...it only works when i push the brake down all the way...any one have any ideas whats wrong....please help!

Brake sensor going bad? That would explain the brake lights and it's reluctance to get out of park.

The brake light switch on the brake pedal is misadjusted, damaged, or failing. Switch should close as soon as brake pedal moves perhaps 1/4" downwards. If you look under the dash on the upper end of the brake pedal you'll see a spring-loaded switch contacting the brake pedal. As brake pedal moves down spring moves to close brake switch. It can be adjusted,...if you can reach the parts.

I hope your's is easy to access. On my 97 TL, it's just barely visible and no clue how to adjust or replace w/o major surgery. I had similar problem and a good dose of WD40 has cured so far.

good luck

I had this problem on my 98 3.0. The fuse for the brake light kept blowin out, just at random, and I was unable to shift out of park. However, the problem didn't like with brake nor shifter. The brake light and horn share the same fuse. There was a short in the wires for the horn, so everytime I tapped the horn, even if it didn't sound, the fuse would blow. I just tested the wires and disconnected the bad horn. Problem solved. Hope this helps.
