Evap Code, Check Engine Light

99 acura cl 3.0, 135,000 miles.

My check engine light came on 3 weeks ago. I went by auto zone and it read a Evap code. I can't remember the number. Then i went to the guy who fixed my trans and he checked the codes (the same evap code came up) and then cleared it for me and said it was probably my gas cap went on loose. Well 300 miles later it comes back on. I called another local guy said that its probably not 'hurting" my car. Also i think im noticing a drop in gas mileage.

I would like to if anyone els has had this problem. And where i should start. Cause i dont have the money to deal with a big "Fix" right now. So if i can do it myself i would love to know.

Google the code number and see what you get, thats how I find out how to fix my codes.

i mean i did. Its a evap leak code i think. i can't remember the number any more, but i did a search and it could be a wide variety. I was just trying to see if this is a common thing.

Evap codes re very general codes that could be a multiple of things. The easiest way to limit it down it to read the code and see if it is a small evap or a big one which the code reader will tell you. The gas caps going out could cause it or a seal if it is a small one. The easiest way to find one without playing the guessing game is to do a smoke test, and that being said most people don't have a smoke machine laying around. So take it to a shop and have that test ran if it really bothers you. Although personally i wouldn't bother with it, it shouldn't harm your engine at all and maybe a slight decrease in gas millage just because your engine will cycle through and use the fumes you are using after they build up rather than using new gas, so it isn't a huge loss if you keep the fumes or not.
