broken stud

ok I just noticed that my valve cover has a broken stud on it, it's leaking oil and I'm getting really nervous driving it. I don't like it at all. Does anyone know if i have to take the whole head off or can I just take the valve cover out, remove the rest of the bolt and than put a new one in?? Where would i be able to get a new stud tho?

Ace Hardware (if you have them) carries metric hardware including what ur looking for. From grade 8 to Stainless Steel. If you don't have Ace Hardware check Lowe's. Don't pull the head for this repair unless it's the rear head and the stud is broken off flush with the head then u will have to drll it and use an easy out to remove. Good Luck

I have a lowe's and home depot. But the stud for all you 2.2 and 2.3 if your lookin at the engine it's the very right one in the front. but the thing is the stud broke at the threads. There's like 1 1/4 thread that it broke at.

Good it's in the front, ur going to have to drill it w/small bit and use an easy out to extract the broken pce. just remember to go slow and don't get frustrated be sure to put shop towels around ur valve springs to catch the shavings from the drillng(shouldn't b much but it doesn't take much to cause damage) My 2 cents Good luck.

ok I went to do extract the rest of the stud and it came out just fine, and than I started threading the new bolt in, it was threading just fine, so it seemed. When Istarted unthreading it just popped out with the threads on the bolt. So now it looks like there are no more threads left to thread into it. Would I be able to rethread the hole and get a bigger bolt?? If so what kind of tools do I need?? HELP ME ASAP, it's squirting oil through this bolt and I'm not driving like this.

Yes it's called a Helicoil which is a set of threads/a tap/a tool to insert the threads into the stripped hole.Napa carries this kit or maybe autozone might. You will also need a good drillbit for the size Helicoil u r useing (say's what size u need on the pkg.)I've been useing them for years and they work great.Just drill /Tap the threads/insert the Helicoil done deal. thanx, I fixed it after I was done gettign frustrated. I did get a bigger bolt and a tap and drilled it out nice and smooth than put new threads in and used the old washer and rubber grommet and I was good to go. I'm glad I didn't take it into the shop I called they said it'd take 7-8 hours and it's $85 an hour. So I said fuck that it shouldn't even take 1 1/2 hours.
