ABS light turns on after 70MPH

So every time I hit 70mph my ABS light comes out and the ABS gives out until the next time I start the car. I really don't know why it does that and I'm wondering if any of you guys know the problems.

The reserve tank for the brake fluid had a crack in it on the top and some fluid would leak out. I got that fixed and added the brake fluid to match the level. Still the light comes on after 70.

Any ideas why it does that?

and here's a crappy cellphone pic with the light on.

Try getting the ABS Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC), it could probably point you in the right direction. Or someone may be able to get you the troubleshooting steps.

How to get ABS Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)

1. Use a paper clip is similar conductive device to complete the circuit for the service check connector located on passenger's side under the dash.
Same shape as this, except on passenger side and blue
2. Turn the ignition switch ON (II) without the brake pedal depressed.

3. The blinking ABS light frequency indicates the DTC.
NOTE: If the DTC is not memorized, the ABS indicator will go off for 3.6 seconds, and then come back on.
4. Turn the ignition switch OFF, and remove the paper clip.

Conditions for DTC indication
  • Vechicle speed is 6 mph (10 km/h) or less.
  • The paper clip is connected before the ignition switch is turned ON (II).
  • The brake pedal is released.

How to read DTC

For example a DTC of 4-2, will have 4 slow blinks then 2 fast blinks.

There is a 0.5-second pause between the slow and fast blinks and 3.6-second pause between each DTC. The ABS system can hold multiple DTCs. So supposed you had 3 DTC of 2-1, 1-2, 1-1; Your ABS light will react as the following:

Ignition ON (II)
- Bulb check (2 seconds)
- 3.6 sec pause
DTC 2-1
- 2 slow blinks
- 0.5 sec pause
- 1 fast blink
- 3.6 sec pause
DTC 1-2
- 1 slow blinks
- 0.5 sec pause
- 2 fast blink
- 3.6 sec pause
DTC 1-1
- 1 slow blinks
- 0.5 sec pause
- 1 fast blink
- 3.6 sec pause

DTC Code Lookup

No DTC and ABS Indicator OFF: ABS indicator does not come on.
No DTC and ABS Indicator ON: ABS indicator does not go on (no DTC).

my light was doing the same thing. i had the speed sensor replaced twice. it ended up being the axle. something with a notch on the axle and when it spun fast it tripped the sensor. so replaced axle and all was good again.

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but do the codes in Nakamichi's post apply to 1998 CLs? I thought I saw somewhere that the codes are different for 97 and 98-99s, but I just wanted to make sure.

I'm getting a 1-5 ABS code on my 1998 2.3CL, the right rear ABS wheel sensor code. I cleaned off the corrosion and inspected the wire and the code didn't go away. Anyway, just wanted to make sure this is the right code so I'm going down the right path before buying a part I might not actually need.

See following link for 98 2.3CL at autozone. 15 = Front Right wheel sensor. I would clean the sensor face and also the tone ring. Stuff a rag in the hole tightly against the tone rig and rotate the wheel to polish the lugs. If this doesn't work check resistance of sensor. I don't know your spec and didn't see it at autozone, but is usually 500-1000 ohms. If short or open, the wheel sensor is bad.

good luck

Thank you TexasHonda! I'm glad I checked with you before unnecessarily buying the RR sensor.

If you need a wheel sensor check ebay for used units; < $50.
