'98 2.3cl possible starter problem

Can anyone help to show me where the starter is located in a '98 2.3cl? It won't start.

Battery and terminals are good. Clicking sound while trying to start it.

How hard it is to replace on my own if I've never done it?

I'm trying to avoid towing it to the dealership.

Also, I have to figure out where to buy a new starter if that is the problem.

Does anyone have a pic of where the starter is located? I have no idea what it looks like.

Thanks,
D

I dont have a pik, but it might not even be the starter, try the alternator
does the car even start when jumped???
ur prolly gunna have to pay for a tow, changing the alternator or the starter are rather big jobs especially if you have no mechanic experience.

Right... I'm not sure if it's wise for me to tackle it if I've never done so before. Does anyone have a pic to show the exact location of the starter? I'd like to try the hammering method to see if I can get it started.

Somehow I feel like I will get ripped off at the dealership.

I bet you can do it. Get a basic socket set and go at it. The starter is located to toward the left side of the of the engine, below the distributor. You can get a new starter at any auto parts store. Do yourself a favor and bring your old one in with you when you buy the new one. You can get it tested there and if you need a new one, you wont have to pay the core charge. heres a link to help you http://www.autozone.com/shopping/rep...00c1528005f3e2

Your starter is on the left side (if your in front of the car looking in (therefore passenger side))
of the engine bay.

Its sort of below the radiator hose line thing....

Thanks guys... I ran back to the train station and had my wife try to start it while I searched for it. And the clicking sound told me which part it was.

It was getting pretty cloudy and I didn't want to get caught in the rain at the train station.

While waiting for the tow truck, it finally fired up after more than 30 tries.

We got screwed by the dealership... but since I didn't have the time to do it, we had them replace it out of convenience.

It came out to $383 I was so annoyed.

Also, I was highly irritated that they made me wait for a loaner, didn't wash our car, and ignored my other request to check the metal clanking sound that they couldn't resolve last time.

For a good customer that purchased a new '06 TL from them... I felt like they treated us like second rated citizens, just because my wife's car is 10 years old.

Very disappointed...
