97 CL dash shift display flashing

I have a 97 CL and I just had the transmission rebuilt. Now when I drive for about an hour, the dash shifter display "D4" starts flashing. Does anyone know what will cause this problem? Is it major or can I continue to drive for a bit?

Thanks,
Dan

That usually indicates that the tranny is screwed up, may be a sensor, or something more serious they didn't catch in the rebuild, I'd at least have them pull the tranny codes and see what the error is b4 you keep driving it

97 dask shift display flashing

My 97 CL is over at Aamco for a Tranny diagnostic because it shifts hard into 1st and 2nd. They're saying that fluid isnt circulating properly in the tranny and that the fluid pump might be bad. They wanna charge $490 labor to take it apart and then $1550 for a rebuilt kit (the $489 will be applied to the $1550). Also they're saying there could be other things wrong that could cost more. Does this pricing sound about right or i'm I getting ripped off if i go for it.?

Always best to start your own thread for more and better responses.

I would suspect this shop is setting you up for a hefty "there were a lot of things wrong when we got in there" change order. I would suggest going to a shop w/ better diagnostic skills. Your symptoms could be nothing more than a blocked inlet screen on the trans hydraulic pump.

If you don't do any DIY, I would suggest a good used trans, and request quotes from reliable shops for removal and installation. You will get a warranty on the used trans (usually no extra cost) and insurance ( ~$200) to cover labor for re-do, if you get a bum trans (it happens!). I used this procedure to replace a worn engine in my son's Dodge Ram 1500 PU and was pleased w/ entire process.

good luck

FYI, I had my trans rebuilt with a 1 year warranty, with tow charge was $1900.

Thanks for the reply TexasHonda. Sounds like pretty much what they want to set me up for.

Their diagnosis info they're giving isn't all that clear on whats wrong and the shop owner is a little too eager to have my tranny pulled apart. But it does not sound right to me that since they pull if apart that I MUST buy the rebuilding kit. Sounds like BS to me.

He even told me if i take the care elsewhere for a second opinion don't bring it back to him. I had it after that. I went in to get my car yesturday and could not get it cause they had already closed up shop, though they were still there and i told them what time i was coming. All this just adds to a really bad experience and i will never recommend anyone going to Aamco, at least not the the one i went to.

I will be taking my car to another shop for a diagnostic on the tranny tomorrow and will see what happens from there. I will be sure to have them check the inlet screen and the pump. Would they have to pull the tranny apart to do this?

thanks in advance

Only the transmission pan must be removed to replace pump inlet screen. This can cause low pump outlet pressure and quite a few problems.

good luck

Got a diagnostic done this morning, and was told I need to start with the 2nd gear pressure switch, because when they go bad the result is hard shifting. Also i got a broken engine mount. I'm gonna start with the pressure switch and maybe have them replace the inlet screen.
