About 2 weeks ago my car started to shift erratically and the speedo stopped working. Replaced the speed sensor and everything seemed fine. While taking it out for a drive just to make sure everything was working, the transmission would randomly disengage with no clunk or jerk. If I restart the car everything works fine again for about 1-3 mins and then the tranny disengages. I fear the worst but have my fingers crossed.

-177k+ miles
-Speedo works when tranny disengages
-No clunks or jerks when it disengages
-Whine comes from engine/tranny intermittently

Any help/advice would be great. Ill try to give more details in the coming days.

 

It looks like the transmission is completely shot. Only runs in reverse now. Unfortunate these transmissions are so fragile, was a great car.

 

I had this same problem after my transmission was replaced and it was the transmission control module, but it if shifting erratically and whining, it may as well be the transmission...has it even been replaced before?

 

It hasn't been replaced, I am thinking of doing that though. I thought it could be the TCM but I haven't had the CEL come on. At the moment the transmission works when the car is in reverse, in any of the drive gears it just refuses to engage.

 

thats bizarre...i hope you find some sort of solution that doesnt cost a ridiculous amount of money!

 

I appreciate it, hopefully i can get a used tranny for a decent price.

 

it cost me like $650 in parts and like a week of pain. those trans are hard to rebuild.if you dont trust yourself to do it just find a totaled cl at the junk yard and pull its tranny.it cost like $1200 and up for someone to rebuild it.

 

i have 1997 cl 2.2 doing same thing if get fix post it please

 

does anyone know if internal filter is the culprit,or failure of converter to lock up?
