3.0 Car Trouble

So I went to go eat lunch with my friend and returned to my car. I started it up and usually the RPM jumps to about 1.2 K rpm and then idles at maybe 600-800. Today it jumped up and then dropped waaaay below. Went up to 1.2K and then dropped. My tach read 0 rpm and the whole car started to shake. Puzzled, I shut the car off and tried it again. Same thing. RPM returned to around 0.
I tried to rev the engine and the RPM would go up as I pressed the throttle, but would again return to 0 when I released it.
My stereo and dash and everything still worked fine but my engine kept dying. I waited about 10 minutes and started it up again and everything worked fine.
Car was in Park the whole time this happened.
Anyone know what could be wrong? I hope it's not a tranny issue
It's a 98 3.0 with 88.6 K miles.

The problem went away for maybe 2 weeks and it's been doing it more and more lately. This is not the same problem as the link. To clarify: the car only has this problem when i'm trying to start it up, the car fires up and then RPM drop to 0 and the car dies. The RPM will increase if I hit the throttle after it fires up, but as soon as I let go of the gas the RPM will die once more and the car will shut off. After about 3-4 tries starting it up and revving the engine I can successfully put my car in gear and drive off, but I don't know how long my car will last with this problem. Anyone?

I've been having similar problems with my car too, except it doesn't actually stall. It will start as normal, and drop to almost 0 RPMS. I have to rev it a bit and the computer kicks the RPMs back up to normal. I put some dry gas in and it hasn't done it since. Maybe something's up with the computer?

I was just going to post and ask the same thing.

Mine seems to rarely happen (started last summer). But when it does, the car has been driven and then sat for 20-30 minutes. Start it up, car dies unless I catch it and give it gas it for 30 seconds or so.

Hasn't happened for a couple months then did it yesterday. The fuel tank was below 1/4 though...

I did change the fuel filter last year when it started. Seemed to help as the rpms would still drop but it wouldn't stall. Maybe time to do it again.

After buying new plugs, wires, and Idle control valve the car is back to normal again. Total cost of labor is $40 plus $4 for pancit(noodles) and a pack of redbull.

Im a happy bitch again.
