2.2CL A/C smoke question...

Whats goin on people? I've been a member for almost a year now, but I havent really said much. I've just been quietly reading what you guys have to say. And I can definitely say you guys know your stuff and its mad cool that you help people like you do.

I just had a question about my 972.2CL Auto. This just randomly started about 2 months ago. When I turn the A/C on eventually(usually like 5 minutes later) some smoke begins to pour into my car. And there is a lot that drifts out of the vents, It usually doesnt stop for about 10 to 15 min and then eventually comes back again. I've been told that it could be humidity or it could be coolant/freeon. I put a napkin up to the vent for a couple of minutes and there was no color or smell.

Has anyone heard of something like this before? I've got 105,000 miles if thats pertinent to the situation.

what color is the smoke? i had this happen to me once, but it was one of my wires that fried, and i just got my windows tinted so i had to pull over with the quickness and get out. do you have it on recycle or letting the air in? I would really get this checked out. no smoke should be going into the cabin

when you said smoke I thought "o'snap he's got a fire in his vents" If its just a clear haze maybe its condensation...(?) Cold A/C vs humid cabin = your problem perhaps?

Yeah, I did the same thing the first time it happened...Shut the air off and it was fine, but when I turned it back on later it still happened. A lot of people I know are saying condensation...but its weird how it happened in the middle of the summer when its been humid the whole time. Im just hoping something big isnt going, because Im still making loan payments on the car.

I havent had it recharged...but Im about to take my car in for pre-winter service. Any other recommendations on what I should do to it or have them look at? How much a does an a/c recharge for the 2.2CL cost? And is that just a freeon flush? BTW, I appreciate all your help.

RECHARGE IT, IMO, that should do the trick, like i said, worked for me. If not, it shouldnt cost more than 65-75 bucks for a flush ( but dont quote me on that!)...but like any flush, make sure nothing gets busted ( line hoses, etc ), that could cause some real problems for you later. Check your lines from the condenser out and look for leaks, cracks, or loose connections on it.

I have this problem on my 99 2.3 cl. I get smoke mist whenever the ac is on but If I put the ac on 60 and on high speed it helps the problem. It also seems like there maybe a vacuum leak or something like that behind the glove box , blower is on. Any advice?

"Smoke" is usually condensed water vapor coming off a completely iced evaporator. Why? Compressor is not cycling, but continually running and cooling evaporator to sub-freezing temps. There is a thermosensor that should be plugged into evaporator. When temp reaches about 28F, the compressor is cycled off and remains off until temp reaches about 45F, then compressor re-engages. If your compressor is not cycling on/off, this is the cause of "smoke".

good luck

i was in traffic once, with the AC on letting in air, and a mustang in front of me did a burnout and all that smoke went straight through my vents. and to answer your questions, its probably vapor, not smoke.
