1999 CL: Replacing ignition switch

I have a 1999 Acura CL that I just bought and it's stalled on me 3 times. I got the records from my Acura Dealership and the previous owner had the recall done but I guess I need to redo it. What part number do I you use? The part # the dealership used seems to be the ones for the 2001 and up CL's(35130-S84-305). Not sure which one I should get. Also, I've searched on this site for the DIY but only could find the one from 6MTUA5 which is really informative but it's for a TL. Does anyone know if this would apply to my 1999 CL?

Sorry, not sure if this should be in the DIY section. Please move if that's the case...

no; that is the failed part. i work at the dealer ship. you're looking for Service Bulletin 02-014 . you NEED updated part: 35130-SY8-305 should only be around $40.

Aloha Project_CLean,
Thank you for the reply and the correction. I'm just a little confused and just want to make sure before I purchase the part. Hopefully you don't mind. I noticed that these are two totally different parts. The one you suggest and which is on my invoice for the previous recall shows:
35130-SY8-305

But the original failed part # 35130-S84-A01 looks like a whole different part since the wiring is included:

I'm sorry. I just want to make sure...I know it would be best to just open it up and see but I figure asking first would save me some headaches.

your 1999 acura cl is not equipped with said part number. 35130-s84-a01 . those switches are for tl's. OUR ignition switches are seperate from the harness. maybe it shows that part because both your CL and TL had the same recalls (different part number but same problem)

PARTS INFORMATION
Ignition Switch:
1997–99 CL – P/N 35130-SY8-305
1999 3.2TL – P/N 35130-S84-305

idk if your car is an auto or what but google these part numbers

35110-sy8-a01 - 5 speed harness
35110-sy8-a11 auto harness

these connect to the switches themselves.

this thing doesn't just slide out. it's in there good. how did you guys get it free? nevermind the third bolt, how did you get the unit free from the steering column once the screws were removed? i can't get this thing out without breaking it, which means i won't be able to put a new one in.

nevermind. i let my inner rage take over and got it done. old one came out like this:

i just pulled the new one apart at the blue plastic part that covers the terminal and reassembled it in place. did not put the "mystery screw" back in. kind of ghetto but it doesn't keep running when i take the key out anymore.

Exclamation 1999 Acura Ignition Switch Removal

I am not sure if this is the preferred method, but I used a dremmel grinding tool and ground the tab at the bottom of the ignition, and a section of the tilt steering mechanism that attaches to the steering column. There was an eyelet, a circular drill whole- I just ground the tilt steering bracket back to that, and then down to the bottom of the switch. There was also a part of the ignition switch itself that fits into a channel on the back of the ignition, I ground about 1/4 inch off of that, and then slid it out of the bottom. I had to remove the shield cap, and bend the switch a little, but it slid out. I bent the new one slightly, and slid that one in- I did not replace the rear shoulder screw, but if the lower dash is removed you can get at it from behind the tilt mechanism, if the bottom dash is still attached, you just have further to reach around. I put the shield cap back on the new switch, and screwed it back together. I will post a picture when I get the chance.

I circled in red where I needed to grind out the surrounding metal, the switch in the picture is the new one installed with the shield removed, the old one is still in tact.
Good luck.

Hi, I had a tough time getting mine out as well but just bent it. My '97 CL has 220,000 and I believe the dealership replaced this at around 100K so this is the second go around and they did not install the 3rd back side screw back then, which is impossible to get to unless you come from behind the steering column. Therefore neither did I install that screw this time and its plenty secure with the two main screws and the plug.

Since the switch portion that can be bent is solid copper bands that aren't soldered into the plug, I decided to bend mine. Taking the blue plug apparatus apart is easy but would then prove problematic reassembling behind the column once the switch is inserted.
So I just bent the switch from a right angle to a near 180 and was able to finesse it into place w/o taking it apart, then bent it back and installed the two main screws.
I got the ignition switch on Ebay with no wires needed, a $32 part with shipping from a good manufacturer and I'm road worthy again.

I can't access the PM system yet. I'd very much like those service instructions for replacing the ignition switch.

Need some guidance

Hello everyone I'm a noob don't know it These two problems will be fix with this replacement of the ignition switch . My Car also stalls occasionally very rare (like on the top of the post ) took it to my mechanic but car don't replicate when I'm there. Also I know there was a recall about the ignition ,my key can be pulled out without the car being in park. If I do this recall would it fix both issues ? I don't know if the old owner did the recall. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
