Tranny Cooler Install

Here's a quick overview of today's tranny cooler install (Hayden model #OC-1677)!
Below is a pic of the battery, battery tie-down, and plastic battery tray after removal.
Then, remove the metal battery tray (4 bolts--circled in red) plus the bolt that holds the battery cables to the battery tray (1 bolt--circled in red).
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Although not pictured, there is a metal support bracket that holds up the metal battery tray. Remove this support bracket by removing 2 bolts. [It makes it easier to get at the tranny return line!]
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Facing the front of the car: Next, locate the tranny return line (which is the one on the right--marked with 2 red circles). If you were to follow the tranny return line, you'll see it connect to the left side of the radiator (at the bottom). The other tranny line (on the left--marked with one red circle) goes more towards the right side of the radiator [you will NOT do anything with this line].
Disconnect the butterfly clamp on the tranny return line (indicated by the top red circle of the two circles) and remove this line [some tranny fluid will come out, but not much; have a rag handy].
Take the end of the tranny hose you just removed and re-rout it towards the front of the radiator (I was able to remove a plastic guard that sits between the radiator and the body frame, and the hose went right through and ended up in front of the radiator--circled in red).
Next, grab the new piece of hose that came with your tranny cooler kit (or you might have to buy about 3-4 feet of tranny cooler hose). Connect this new piece of hose to where the ORIGINAL tranny return line was (marked with two red circles), and rout the other end to the front of the radiator [as you did with the other hose--see pic above: new hose goes through the gap where the word "Line" is written in red]).
Then, connect the 2 hoses to the tranny cooler as shown below. The line that connects at the bottom (as indicated by two red circles) is the line that goes to the radiator. The line that will go from the tranny cooler back to the transmission (the new tranny return line) is shown with 1 red circle.
You'll need to move the horn on the right, and swing it over, on top of the left horn.
Then, mount the tranny cooler as suggested in the instructions. If you choose to use their mounting kit, you'll need to stick the ties through the tranny cooler's fins, through through the radiator's fins, cap the ties (on the radiator side), and trim the ties.
Put the support bracket for the metal battery tray back in place (2 bolts). Mount the metal battery tray (4 bolts), attach the battery cable support bolt, and replace the plastic battery tray.
Replace the battery, and battery tie-down strap.
Finally, check for leaks, and you're done!

Yet again, wonderful DIY tutorial Klepto. Virtual rep points for you.
Where did you pick up this tranny cooler? Is it possible that the comptech one would be better/more efficient?

Tip: When you move the right horn to the left side, dont let it touch the other horn - if it does, when you use your horn they vibrate against each other and sound messed up lol... so just lower the left one a little and you're good.

Photos?
Hey Klepto!
Do you have any photos of your tranny cooler install?? Do you know if Dustbuster is still using these forums or did he move on to another vehicle.??
Thanks in advance!!

Did mine today. Took a little bit of time because I did the three flush method on the fluid as well. Hopefully this will let me keep on keeping on in my 3.0. 110k miles so far and no slipping!

Can someone explain to me how the radiator is in play with this? Do you connect anything to the coolant, or do you just run the tranny lines in and out through the cooler? Thanks

you just pull off the line with two red circles, hook that up to the cooler.
take your new hose (that came with your cooler), connect one end where you just took the other line off of, and stick the other end on the remaining male piece of your cooler.
you're just interrupting the returning fluid so it cools down a bit..
the radiator really has nothing to do with it, except you are putting the cooler in front of it.. at least that's how it was for me

Nice, that's what I was making sure of shnee, this is way easier than I thought. Now other question, where do you fill the extra .5 tranny fluid into?

I have 154k on my tranny and the only thing I do to it is change out the tranny fluid every year. No slippage yet and the response is still there like the day I bought it! Would it be worth it for me to put in one of these tranny coolers?

Just ordered my cooler, same question as above. Do we need to add more fluid?

I added about 1/2 Qt
I lost some when I pulled the line and while I was getting it through the opening in the front.

i got mine at advanced auto parts (pep boys, autozone, etc)
but they only had one model and supposedly it's not as good as these haydens, which you can get at a haydens store.
btw, no fluid came out when i did mine.. zero.. so i didn't add anything..
transmission is running fine after a year

Bagel Bomber
Its soposed to.
Its using air flow through the coils to disapate heat. Much like your radiator. Both get hot. I'd be worried if it wasn't hot as hell. Its doing what its soposed to.

Aight, thanks for the replies man. I did a drain and fill and installed the cooler this past weekend. Also i added some lucas tranny treatment in there after the change, didnt see too much of an improvement but it feels a little better some how.
I also did the seafoam through the brake booster, thats some funny shit.. there was smoke everywhere.
Thanks guys.

Got another question, sorry.. I brought my own ATF for the drain and fill, they only used 3 qts. The tech said since some other parts in the tranny were not drained(can't remember which ones) they still had fluid in them so he only used 3 of the 4 qts i brought. Is that ok to only use 3 qts instead of the 4?

What do you think: Should I buy 99 cl 3.0 w/56K actual miles for $5500? I'm very worried about transmission problems to come. Drove very smoothly from cold start. Is it possible to put an oil jet kit in there as well as the transmission radiator? The car also has SRS light and bad passenger window.
