replace front brake pads
replace front brake pads
Car is a 99 cl 3.0
I'll be replacing front brake pads soon and I have a few questions.
1. Is the Chilton manual good to have or is their a service manual from acura that is recommended?
2. I will probably need new rotors (they have been cut at least twice) as well as pads. I've seen ceramic pads discussed here, but I am not looking for performance parts, I'd much rather have pads that last as long as possible. I also have had bad experience with ceramic pads on a econobox (89 celica I think, or it might have been an econobox toyota). They barely lasted 9 months. Granted I do alot of driving. My commute one way is just about 34 miles (mostly highway), but I want pads that last as long as possible. Should I get oem pads and rotors or another brand? Which brand would anyone here reccomend. Is semi metalic pads standard?
3. I saw jacks and jack stands at sears. Will this do?
4. I'd also like to know where the best do it yourself guide can be found. I'd like to have someones experience along with the service manual
Thanks!

1. You shouldn't need a service manual. It's two bolts to get the calipers apart.
2. Get OEM rotors. I recommend ceramic pads, but OEMs are good too.
3. When I was still on stock suspension, I was able to get an SUV jack underneath the car, so that should work fine.
4. There might be a DIY on here, but if not Google for disk brake pad replacement. It shouldn't be too different than any other vehicle. Unbolt the caliper. Remove the pads. Push the piston in with a C-Clamp. Place new pads. Bolt the caliper back on. Make sure your brake pedal doesn't feel spongy, and you're good.

^^^ what he said.
I'll add that bendix blanks are 18 bucks from advance auto parts, and have been working great, regularly 78 each. I'd go with ceramic pads also, and dont forget to grease the backs so they dont squeel.

I got my pads and rotors from Advance Auto and I don't advise it. Everytime I hit the brakes my steering wheel goes nuts and shakes uncontrollably. I am going to Acura and pay the $140/rotor and $65 for the pad set soon.
