Windshield crack

Well, I was driving to work this morning and a semi that was in front of me kicked up a huge rock that hit my windshield. You guessed it, my windshield now has a 1/2" chip in it. So, I called my insurance company to see how much it would be to fix, but it's not worth it to claim, since my deductible is so high. So I proceeded to AutoZone where I found a Windshield fix-a-dent kit, which I will try out tonight. I'm going to try it out tonight...screw it, if it doesn't work, then I'll need to get a new windshield anyway...no loss. Has anyone used one of these before--if so, does it work well?

Good luck, it'll be an interesting project. As long as it doesn't spider out, or crack more, you should be ok. when u say 1/2" chip, do you mean long or deep? just curious, good luck diddy

The actual chip mark is about 1/4" in diameter but the small cracks in the glass make it about 1/2". Yeah, I think you're right--as long as it doesn't spider out it shouldn't be too bad to fix, which is why I'm trying to fix it ASAP. Thanks.

if the spider legs start to grow, you can take a glass cutter and curley-cue the crack so that it will crack into itself and stop growing. Hope the chip fix works for you.

actually last weekend i just used that "fix a chip" stuff. Used it on 3 cracks its really easy to do, you just have to make sure that you try and get lots of resin in the cracks so it doesn't spider web anymore. Also use a lighter on the inside of the glass while you let the resin sit. This helps the resin get in all the cracks and harden faster. Lay a towel on top of your dash while you do it to so you dont burn anything too nice lol. Hope that helps somewhat.

sorry to threadjack, but what about the windshield just getting pitted and worn from age? is there any compound that will clean up the surface of the glass and even it out some?

aren't there places where they can just fill in the crack. it'll be about $50. they have that up here in some parking lots.

That's my problem... I heard toothpaste is the cheapest way to go, but there is a $40.00 paste you can get in an autosupply store. I imagine its a very fine grain buffing agent...
