So what exactly is "vortec" - when does it engage? what does it do?

Our cars have vtec.

that foo call it vortec! u needa pop ur hood and check again.

 

maybe he got a s/c under there and dont even know it...

 

it be funny if he did pop up his hood and look. then be like "nah its said Vortec on it"

 

if its an s/c and u have a 2.2, u dont need it. just ship it to me and i will dispose of it for you free if charge....

If your talking about GM's Vortec Engine, thats represents GM's engine design that uses something called "vortex technology". It actually creates a vortex inside the combustion chamber. If supposed to be more efficient and create a better air-to-fuel mixture during combustion.

"VTEC (which stands for Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) is an electronic and mechanical system in some Honda engines that allows the engine to effectively have multiple camshafts. As the engine moves into different rpm ranges, the engine's computer can activate alternate lobes on the camshaft and change the cam's timing. In this way, the engine gets the best features of low-speed and high-speed camshafts in the same engine."
