Universal Mufflers

hey guys, i was wondering if Universal Mufflers are any good? Cause i don't have enough for a whole exhaust, and maybe save a little money by gettin a universal muffler and doing custom piping. What do you think? and where could i find great prices on them? cause most are like 2 bills any for 1? I know, just save up rite? but i'm just a student with no money, workin at min. wage.

you can get the cat-back system which would be better than the one that you have on there now..... but then again you could lose some low-end with it. i dont know how big the difference is on the 3.0, but on the 2.2 it is a little noticeable (not that honda 4cyl engines are known for the neck snapping torque anyway).

maybe someone with a 3.0 could elborate on the effects of the less restrictive exhaust.

i will tell you this tho.... if you get the universal now..... you'll wish you had gotten the cat-back later. that is just the way things seem to work out.

As long as the muffler shop doesn't do crush bends and it ends up cheaper than buying a brand name catback system, go for it! The exhaust gases won't know the difference.

i went to a muffler shop and jus had piping made with a universal muffler. that is our only option anyways i do believe. i don't know any companys that make an exhaust for our cars. most of our piping is 2.5" already so all you need to have the muffler shop do is replace some of the piping. there is just 2 small sections where acura reduced the piping to 2.25" for quietness. leave the rest of the piping as is. a shop sould charge around 40 to do the piping plus whatever you pay for the muffler. don't go any bigger than 2.5" because you'll lose power, unless you plan on running a turbo, then thats different. as far as a gain, i think you'll notice a difference. the stock muffler is really restrictive (heavy too), i'll think you'll see a difference. i'll post a pic tommorrow of my muffler, i like it a lot. e-mail me and i can get an exhaust made for you and ship you a new exhaust like mine for a little over 200 (not sure exactly). jacobzking@aol.com

Look in JC Whitney... I know they have a lot of universal mufflers, and I heard one on a Mazda MX6 V6 and it sounded mean... very low and deep tone, not too loud but definatly noticable. I think they run between $100 and $150,something like that... plus a big selection of tip choices. Either that or an Apexi universal muffler... those sound awesome, but are kind of pricey.

I am running a Maxspeed universal on my 2.3. I also had the pipes from the cat mandrel bent. The muffler was $100 on it's own and I paid $175 for the rest. It didn't do too much and I lost some low end. It did pull better at the high rpms.

Aerospeed Bomb Series....take out the silencer for 5-9 HP increase. They look great too...can even get a carbon fiber one but it will cost 200 bones....the stainless steel ones start at around 179. just go to aerspeed.com for pics and info.

Magnaflows are great. All stainless, good sound, & robust construction. If you can get one for $100 that's a great deal.

Yeah I have a magnaflow on my 3.0 and I love it, I got it for 150 at this Muffler shop. I love the nice deep toned sound it gives out, I'm thinking about getting another muffler and doing a custom dual exhaust like on the new V6 accords, I went to see if it can be done and the guy said it could but I'd have to cut part of the skirt off and sand it down. So I took the skirt off today and am probably gonna go take it in on Monday, I'm probably gonna paint all the skirts to match the carcolor so it should work out good. Anywayz good luck with the muffler. Tomas

Well, the Magnaflows tend to be straight through designs, but they're not going to be louder than say, an Apexi N1, which is basically just a resonator.
