Transmission trouble
I have a '97 3.0.
Ok, so a couple of weeks ago, I got the check engine light and the blinking D4 light. I had the code read at Autozone and it was P0700, TCM Malfunction, and P0715, Mainshaft Speed Sensor malfunction. I decided to order a speed sensor and see if that might fix the issue. In the mean time, I tried to find where the speed sensor was so I disconnected the battery and removed the battery and its tray to try to locate the speed sensor. As I indicated in another thread, I am not sure if i did find the proper location of that speed sensor. After I put everything back together and reconnected the battery, the car seemed to shift much smoother when I drove it.
I have lately also noticed that when it's really cold in the morning, it seems that the transmission gets stuck in neutral when trying to shift. When I do warm it up, it seems to shift fine.
Just today, while driving this evening, it was getting harder and harder for the tranny to shift. It tended to get stuck in neutral and then jerk into gear. I stopped by the side of the road, disconnected the battery, and waited about a minute before reconnecting. The car shifted better after that but the jerking came back not too long afterwards.
So, could this be simply a problem with a relay? Just the speed sensor? Or God forbid, is my tranny dead? Also, I am going to try once again to find the speed sensor and change it. If anyone could help with a pic of the mainshaft speed sensor on the tranny, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks to all for your help.

Well, I'm taking it to the stealership tomorrow. I'll have my fingers crossed taht it's only the speed sensor. BTW, I checked the resistance of the countershaft speed sensor and it was .5ohm. Now that may very well be it.

I would not sell that transmission short just yet.
If resetting the computer clears the problem temporarily, than it is sensor related. If clearing the ecu had no effect, then I would think it was too late for your transmission. But don't wait too long. This trouble with the sensor will eventually lead to internal transmission damage if it has not already.
Good luck.

Last year (round the same time) Rick Case Acura fixed the transmission, (by replacing some parts). Now that the tranny is shot to hell, RCA said they won't fix the tranny under warranty because it's a year Younger than the 99 which acura has deem a problem. SO, im going to drive the car the way it is and say F* it till I get a new car by Mid Summer.I think the TSX looks nice. What are you going to do about your tranny?

Well, I've been shopping around for prices for rebuilds and swapping with a used tranny. The lowest I've gotten for a rebuild is $1800 with a 1 year warranty. I might spring for this. Before I do, I think I am going to order a used TCM (the tranny computer) for about $80 and try to see if that may be the problem. The reason why I'm thinking it might something electrical like that is the fact that after disconnecting and reconnecting the battery, it shifts better for a while. If this does not succeed, then I will go for the rebuild.
I know it will be faster to get a used one put in but I figure I may end up with the same problem shortly afterwards. Besides, for $1800, I think a rebuild is awesome.
BTW, is replacing the TCM as simple as removing the center console, disconnecting the cables from the one in there, and installing the "new" one?
another BTW, I'm in Portland, OR now. I'll change my profile to reflect that.

got it here at a shop in Portland. I'm having them pick up the car and they said they will have it done in 5-7 days. I verified the warranty and the owner said it would be 1yr/15k. That's not bad.

I paid $2K for a crated tranny installed. 1 year warrantee. Of course, that has been over now for two years. Mine died from the previous owner's miss use. So far I've had no trouble, but I get worried when she downshifts further than I wanted her to.
You know instead of dropping from 4th to third it goes for second.... I don't do high RPMs, much over 5500, but sometimes when I really get after it on the freeway... she kicks down further than I want and the RPMs get up ove 6K... V6 don't like that too much. But, so far so good. Just get it replaced and stay on the maintanance schedule, you'll be fine.

I hope your replacement for Precious is doing better than she... Did you post that Hoss has her on blocks with a dead transmission? What a waste.
Hope things a well in the UK.
Cheerio...
