Tranny shifter button probs

So I suddenly have to depress the living crap out of my button on my auto tranny shift lever to get it to change gears. I took the knob off, its obvious how it works, nothing looked worn that I could see, anyone have this happen or is it common? I assume I need to replace the button as the ramp would be the only item that could wear and cause this.

yeah.. i once took the knob off (that's right, i get knobs off) and put it all back together wrong.. it was really hard , so i removed it and put it back on, and it was fine.
you have to push the button in all the way so the spring is compressed, then put it on and insert the screws (screw the knob.. got it)
if you dont have the spring compressed when you stick it on, it doesnt work right.
at least thats what it seemed like to me..

theres a little angled stick at the top when you remove the knob, shaped like gumby's head. unscrew it 1 or 2 turns if the above stuff doesnt work out. make sure it slopes from bottom left to top right and not the other way around.
