Timing Gear Question
Timing Gear Question
The more I think about it I may be hurting myself more than helping with my timing gear (no dyno so dont know). The whole idea behind changing the timing is to maximize the efficiency of the combustion process (hence the increase in power).
On the DOHC engines you can open the intake valves earlier (more air) and open the exhaust valves later (more complete combustion).
On the SOHC if you advance the timing to open the intake valves earlier the exhaust valves are now opening earlier (like during the downstroke of the piston) possibly losing power.
If you retard the cam to get more complete combustion by opening the exhaust valves later, you lose the amount of air going into the cylinder (and maybe power) since the piston is already on the way down before the valve opens.
So the question is: Can a SOHC benefit from a timing gear (robbing peter to pay paul?) Is 0 degree offset the maximum power setting?

Feel like Im talking to myself, but if anyone else is curious. Talked to AEM Thurs and the tech said the setting for our (the 2.2) application is 2 degrees advance (1 tick on the gear). He didnt know why. He was just reading the info he was given.
Timing gears with the stock camshaft does not yield any neglegable horsepower gains. Well I heard 1-2 MAYBE.
I'd suggest getting more agressive cam from either bullfrog or webcam, (since those are the only 2 companies you can get thecam from) both are regrinds though. Than i heard maybe a 5-8 hp gain w/ the adjustable cam gears.
I've been trying to do that same, however I don't have time for downtime for the car since I have to take the cam out of the car, send them in, and have the build up on the lobes, than send them back.
Heh heh.. good luck... if u get them, tell me how they are and I might actually do this
. I've been thinking bout this for 3/4 year, but I've had so much school lately, even a full summer session w/ a 1/2 a week break inbetween, BTW school started again... arggh!!!
Tell me how it goes
