Timing Belt Replacement

my question regarding the timing belt is there anyway i can tell if my timing belt is bad with out having to bring in it. are there any signs or symptons that can give me an idea if it needs replacement. i know at about 80,000 miles or so it needs to be replaced. im not sure if my previous owner did or not. when i bought the car the CARFAX report said it had been serviced frequently, hopefully it was replaced. the car was bought in almost perfect condition expect for the 103,000 miles. ive heard many stories of timing belts breaking out of no where and it honeslty scares me.

97 2.2 doesnt need to be changed until 105,000. Its in the manual. Im not sure of the symptoms. Make sure it was changed first. Im sure a mechanic can tell if its the old one or a new one in there, especially if it was a non-factory part.

Well if it was getting bad you may see cracks or a general worn-out look to the belt. This is not 100% foolproof and you should stick to what acura recommends (100,000 miles or so).

Oh, and get the water pump replaced when you do the timing belt too.

Looks like it is pretty well covered, On the Mistress, they put a sticker on the shroud. It tells the date and Milage of when it was changed. That is if you have a thorough mechanic do it.

if it goes youll know.. it will break.. it hardly ever gives any warning..if it does it will whine (hitting the timing cover) or it will be slapping the cover cause it broke in half (least likley.) or it will just break.. at 80k dont worry bout it.. if your that worried about it change it..it cant hurt to change it early and have the peice of mind.

It's actually 90k miles for a 97 2.2 CL... It's 105k for the 3.0 V6 engine

Naw to be honest, it probally wasn't changed. Think about it why would someone change it right before they were selling it?

i dunno maybe it was done, before they were thinking about selling it. im still gonna get it looked at though. but if your right about the 90K it probaly would have snapped 13K later.

Any detailed instructions (+hints) out there?

I wrote Slee, but is there anyone else out there that changed the timing belt? I have 15,000 km before I must perform on my '98 Acura 2.3CL.

I have a printout of the procedure from PartSource where I bought a water pump.

I understand that the water pump should be replaced at the same time. I bought a Signature water pump. It's an American pump and states it meets and exceeds OEM standards. Is this true or should I return it and buy a Honda OEM pump?

If possible I would like to get a detailed procedure with hints. It could be sent as an attachment.

The reason is that I tried to change the outer CV boot on the driver's side a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, I found out after the fact that I didn't need to take off the inner CV boot. I put new boots on, but screwed up on the inner alignment and screwed the entire axle. I saved the boots, but had to buy a new axle. I'd prefer to not learn the hard way on this job. If I screw up, it could cost me the motor. The other option is $700 CAD at the shop. I'd prefer to try myself before shelling out this kind of coin.

Cali3.0, how is the job progressing?

What year is your 3.0? Is the timing belt the same for '97-98 2.3CLs? Did you buy an Honda water pump or try an OEM equivalent?

Please post your results here as well. I think everyone will benefit from your story!
